Period 3: Mrs. Turner’s appearance in chapters 16 and 17 raises the same issues that Janie’s family tree does. Revisit these chapters. Answer the following questions: 1. What happens when Tea Cake physically abuses Janie? Why does he use violence? How would Tea Cake explain this abuse? What does Janie think of his violent actions? 2. What is the community’s perception of Tea Cake and Janie’s relationship after the physical abuse? How do expected roles within relationships and definitions of love contribute to this perception? by Carrie Thomas

Tea Cake beats Janie due to his jealousy of Mrs. Turners' brother and to show that he still controls her. He tries to make up for it by pampering her after. He rationalizes his abuse by not doing it because Janie deserved it but to show Mrs. Turners' brother that he owns Janie, he is very possessive and treats her like an object and the community is jealous of it. Janie doesn't show and type of resistance towards the abuse and lets it happen she's convinced hes doing it out of love. The community is jealous of Tea Cakes hold and power over Janie and doesn't think it's a bad thing.

1) Tea Cake physically abuses Janie to show that he still is "in charge". The strange thing is that Janie doesn't show any resistance. She doesn't fight back at all. The grotesque part about the situation is the community envies their situation. He treats her like gold, yet he hits her. This shows Tea Cake's insecurities as an individual. He is incredibly threatened by other men in the community and he is worried that Janie will find another.
2)The novel says that their situation created envy from other man and women in the community. In relationships men are expected to have all the power. Women are supposed to take what the man says and do it, Especially in this time period. The men are jealous that they can't treat their wife like the way Tea Cake treats Janie. They want to be able to abuse their wives and not have them fight back or threaten to leave. Personally, I am disappointed in Janie that she doesn't stick up for herself and defend herself. I don't understand how she could be happy in this relationship.

Tea Cake is starting to get jealous and wants to show that he is still in charge and that he is still the boss. Tea Cake says that he only beat Janie to prove a point to the Turner family who is boss. Janie doesn't really have any hard feelings towards him after so she must be fine with it.
2. The men of the community envy Tea Cake because he has control over Janie and the other men don't have control of their wives. At that time the men were always in control of the relationship, so it was normal at that time for this to happen so nobody thought anything of it.

1. When Tea Cake physically abuses Janie, it assures him that she belongs to him and that he is the dominant partner in the relationship. He uses violence because he is jealous of Mrs. Turner's brother. Janie has spent a lot of time with Mrs. Turner, so Tea Cake worries that he will lose Janie to somebody else. Tea Cake uses violence because he is insecure and has trouble trusting Janie to be loyal to him. Tea Cake explains this abuse as a coping mechanism for his worry that Janie will leave him. Janie doesn't think much of this abuse, as she downplays it and doesn't acknowledge how wrong it is. Janie's reaction was to accept the beatings because she believed that Tea Cake was hurting her out of love.
2. The community perceives Janie and Tea Cake's relationship in a positive manner. People envied their relationship for how loved Janie was. The men desired a woman like Janie because she didn't fight back against Tea Cake like the other wives who were loud or would try to not get beaten. These men admired Janie for staying with Tea Cake despite the marks he left on her body. The definition of love for Janie is warped, as she would have stood up for herself if she understood that love and abuse do not go hand in hand. Janie's previous relationship gave her no independence, so when she is whipped by Tea Cake she doesn't comprehend that it shouldn't be happening in a loving marriage.

Showing his insecurities and his fear of losing her to another man. When Janie doesn't listen to him about ending her friendship with Mrs. Turner she denies him control and power which he tries to display and gain by beating her. Janie did not think much of the beating trying to understand why he did it.
2) The community accepts and goes as far as envying the abuse Tea Cake inflicts on Janie. Janie does not fight back or make a fuss about the abuse. Back then it was the men who were dominant over the women who were expected to obey their husbands. Who had both power and control over them, which he reasserted over her.

Tea Cake uses violence because he feels threatened by Mrs. Turner's brother so he beats her to show that he still controls Janie. Tea Cake pampers Janie afterwards and she doesn't really care that he beat her, kinda like she is okay with it. Tea Cake would most likely explain that the reason he abused Janie was to show that he cared for her and doesn't want her to leave him.
2.) The community seems to be envious of Tea Cake's control over Janie. They don't really seem bothered by the fact that a man beat his wife. It is actually 50 Shades type stuff but it's fine. Tea Cake would explain is as showing her who's boss and that he is dominant. Janie thinks it's a sign of affection and she loves him still. She doesn't run away or anything like the girl in 50 Shades did so shes a strong woman that deals with stupid stuff from men and that's stupid but it's her life. Whatever.
2. Women are supposed to love their man and serve him and let him show his dominance.

The community's perception of Tea Cake and Janie's relationship seems to be that they all praise their relationship as being ideal.

1. When Tea Cake abuses Janie is it described as having left marks where the public can see, most likely her face or arms. Tea Cake does this because he's jealous, not because he's mad at Janie, but because he's mad at the idea of Janie being with Mrs. Turner's brother. Tea Cake wants to show everyone the control he has within the relationship. It doesn't say what Janie thinks of it just that she didn't fight back or scream.
2. The community envies their relationship even more after the abuse. The men want to be able to slap their wives without them fighting back or screaming, and it seems like the men would want the honor of slapping Janie. The expected roles within a relationship are that the man is the dominant and the controlling force and the woman just goes along with whatever the man wants. That is a man's dream relationship and that is the reality of relationships before woman's rights.
