Most people do not celebrate due to the fact the most have religions that disapprove christmas. If you are one of those religions and you get caught you will most likely get persecuted. American personnel usual has a mass/church session. As seen in the image below the American soldiers usually take a picture with santa clause. Christmas is a very laid back day for soldiers in Afghanistan. But if they are even threatened they have to go back to business as usual.

Afghanistan is a very non-religious country. Due to the majority of the religions do not believe in Jesus Christ. Many troops say they feel that they can't celebrate christmas happy due to some of the things they saw/did.
