We discuss this at the beginning of the course, and students usually bring up that they want a respectful class atmosphere. At times students will react to a comment made in class and I have to remind them to respect the everyone's diversity and allow for differences of opinion and different points of view. If I feel the class swaying towards one direction on an issue, I usually ask questions to make them question their beliefs and perhaps start to hear other sides of the issue. This allowed her to gather her thoughts then share her concerns safely.
