In Health class we discuss a lot of controversial and sensitive subjects. We discuss this at the beginning of the course, and students usually bring up that they want a respectful class atmosphere. At times students will react to a comment made in class and I have to remind them to respect the everyone's diversity and allow for differences of opinion and different points of view. If I feel the class swaying towards one direction on an issue, I usually ask questions to make them question their beliefs and perhaps start to hear other sides of the issue. This is also part of their final project for the semester - they must use logos, ethos, and pathos to convince other students how to live healthfully on a topic of their choice, but also present the opposite view as to why some people may or may not do this (either out of willfulness or ignorance).

"I am surprised to hear your say that" or "Did you mean to say something hurtful/discriminatory when you made that comment" are good go-to questions to facilitate introspection and reflection from the speaker. Several years ago, a student experienced discrimination from an adult visiting the campus -- a photo company rep directed a female muslim student not to "wear a costumes or hair accessory" in the photo. The student was shaken and said nothing in the moment. Later, she wrote a little letter to the rep and delivered it. This allowed her to gather her thoughts then share her concerns safely.

In MS and HS I have heard kids quickly accuse each other of being a "racist". Often this is triggered by conversations around culture and race. I wonder if they are quick to jump to this because they don't know how to talk about their differences or if they truly are not sure what it means to be racist. This accusation is a serious one and I think this trend needs to be addressed.
