First, graffiti and street art are different. Graffitis are illegal, and they deliver a message to the inhabitants of the district or town they are tagged in. Gangs use them to « mark their territory ». Street art, however, is meant to be beautiful or at least more pictural. Legal or not, it addresses to all pedestrians, even tourists.

Then, you need to know that they are different levels. A one-line writing is a tag, it is the very first level. Here’s an example :

Then, you have thrown-ups : thicker writing that often includes 3-D, light and shadows, and sometimes a background. You want an idea of what it looks like ? Here’s one :

The last level is called « a piece ». It is a drawing, an illustration or a writing that integrates pictural elements : flowers, geometric shapes, etc. As you can guess, street art usually takes the form of a piece, and graffiti uses thrown-ups and tags.

A tip

One last thing, a tip to know whether a piece is legal or not : illgeal pieces are made in 20-30 minutes, so the artist might use stencils and stickers, they might glue a sculpture or spray-paint something quite small. Well, I think we’re done ! You have all the tools to understand and better appreciate these wonderful pieces :)
