The significance of this quote is that the Shakkei is blurring the lines between reality and a reflection of expectations. This can be highlighted from the quote “No longer distinguish what was real and what were only reflections in his life” Through this quote, it depicts a potential of clarity in identity or truth. This blurring mirrors the novel’s theme of memory and trauma. Just like how Aritomo chooses what to put in his garden, symbolises chooses how they want to remember. This shows that how individuals reconstruct & suppress parts of their memories to survive. Just like how Shakkei incorporates distance, external elements in the garden shows how that Aritomo & Yun Ling selects the memories that they choose to preserve to make sense of their expectations. This incorporation creates a fragile balance between what is genuine & what is constructed. This also can be seen

2a) It suggests that identity is fluid, as Aritomo adapts his traditional ukiyo-e to paint scenes of Malaya.

2b) Art is a way to express identity, allows one to convey their character onto a canvas in which others can see without the need for words. This allows others a gateway into ones thoughts and feelings and identity. For example, Aritomo uses ukiyo-e to show his connection with both Malaya and Japan.

2c) The subject matters in Aritomo's ukiyo-e are unusual as they do not depict the usual motifs found in ukiyo-e. Instead, Aritomo uses ukiyo-e to create scenes in Malaya.

2d)

chinese vs jpn - symmetry, planned scenery, borrowed, everything has a place

og vs ari's art - og has symbolism, ari has planned scenes different landscapes.

(we tried)

Yun Ling deems her memories as unreliable documentation of the historical truths of the people whom she had known in her life. This is evident from ‘if the people there had actually said what I think I remember.’ Yun Ling doubting her memories about what was said by the people around her is ironic since she uses memory as a resistance to forgetting. She fears the act of forgetting and losing her memories because they have shaped her identity. She not only stores her trauma in her mind, but becomes the vessel for others’ histories as well. This is a threat of aphasia and also the loss of memory of others, which is a form of secondhand preservation for Yun Ling. Her form of intangible documentation contrasts with the tangible evidence of the existence of the garden.

In the “ garden of the evening mists “ tan twan eng shows how identity and individualism is affected by change and displacment from surroundings through the dynamics between the characters in the novel and their backstory. this historical fiction novel writes about how yun ling battles traumas from the japanese war, causing her to loose her once free and warm life to her current cold life entrapped in hatred. Tan also shows the dynamics through other characters like magnus and the sergeant.

Tan uses the quote “ once you step out of your world, it doesnt wait for you “. this is significant as “ your world “ is in reference to what one expects off from a memory, marinated in the sense of familiarity. similiar to how we expect the sun to rise every morning due to our experiences from the past. however, displacement causes a change in individuality as one’s regular surroundings has changed and thus they become their own person without expectstions influencing them. in the novel, yun ling displaces from her home when her sister died, when she lost her sense of freedom and reliability on her parents where her mom is mentally deteriorating and her dad is distancing himself away from her. her mindset and personality begans to change. from the asian expectations of her parents that they were “ horrified that [ magnus ] had marked his body like that, like… a gang member “ when magnus showed his chest tattoo to her willingly asking aritomo for a back tattoo. As she takes in less of her parents comments and perspectives while gaining her own knowledge like the beauty and art of a japanese tattoo, she gains the independence of her own opinions and taste that leads her to get a tattoo. her personality also changes from her being
