They helped prove information that was formerly known as correct false (for example they found that the earth wasn't the center of the solar system) 

The church religion in the middle ages was said that it was a 100% accurate map of reality. The catholic church said they were right about everything and that everything they say about everything is true. But then the scientific discovery was a threat to catholic authority because the Catholics believed they were the center of the solar system. It was a threat. It challenged beliefs. 
If one thing they said isn't true- what about the other ones?
