Pets that are abandoned live the saddest lives. Imagine you were the abandoned pet. What if you got rocks thrown at you. How would you feel, if someone hung you by the neck. You wouldn’t like it. Pets that are abandoned are seen as “nothing to care about” that’s are treated like this.

How to stop it

If you feel awful for that cat or dog in the beginning, it’s ok. People sometimes do bad things that shouldn’t be happening. If you want to stop what abandoned pets go through just imagine as if the pet were a human being. Yes we love them but sometimes we just forget they’re there. One of my neighbors feeds the abandoned cats on the streets. There used to be someone with about three cats but then he moved to a new house and the owner told him he couldn't have animals, so he abandoned the cats. A way to stop this from happening is bringing the cats to a shelter and explain that you cannot have pets in your new house becasue the lanlord or owner doesn't permit it. One way of stopping abandoned pets is to not let them roam free unless they have supervision.

Shelters

When pets are abandoned, they are most likely to end up on the streets. After that, a van from a certain shelter company will pick the abandoned pet up and take it to the shelter. Soon after, more and more pets arrive the shelter will fill up, with not enough space left. Now some pets got to go. Most shelters keep rare breeds or more expensive ones and put cheaper, less rare pets “to sleep”. The scientific word for being put the sleep is Euthanasia (Eu•tha•na•sia). Although they put pets to sleep some shelters are against that. These shelters are called no kill shelters. They either keep all pets in shelter facilities or sell them quickly at a well growing business like Petsmart or Petco.

Why do people abandon pets anyway? Mostly dogs and cats are abandoned, more than other pets. People abandon pets because of either too much barking, meowing or someone new to the family has allergies. These aren't good reasons to abandon pets. Why adopt a dog if someone in your family is allergic. If the dog or cat scatches furniture and cause damage. Then, you can take it back but not abandon it. A big one is how dogs bite. Biting is huge because people can sue for up to 20k depending on how hurt hte victom is. If and once the owner pays the money, he or she will most likely abandon the pet so it is no longer his or her responsibility. Who wants to pay 20k?? For cats it’s also huge. A big reason they are abandoned is population. Cats mate with other cats on the streets and soon the owner will have 1 to 10 kittens. The owner will most likely abandon them on the streets or put them in a box to die because who would want to pay more just to take care of kittens.

Over 7.6 million pets are abandoned each year. 1.5 million pets get “put to sleep” after ending up in shelters. The rest either get abused to death or die on the streets. Two 11 year olds threw rocks at a pregnant cat. Not only that but a 12 year old hung a dog. Do you see what abandoned pets go through? Of the 1.5 million pets that are put to sleep 670,000 are dogs, 860,000 are cats. The rest are other abandoned animals like rabbits or guinea pigs

Pets are soft, fluffy creatures, yet we humans abandon them. They live painful lives, eating whatever they can to survive. So many "reasons" to abandon pets. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Not all pets end up in shelters…
