Flashbulb Memories in Middle School

I wasn’t a reader in middle school, and the Dewey Decimal System is still confusing for me. Yet, the school library and its librarian, Mrs. Hetzler, left an indelible mark on my life. After transitioning from an elementary school with a closet-sized library, the new middle school building was impressive, but the true highlight was the welcoming atmosphere Mrs. Hetzler created.

At a time when my parents' divorce made me feel small and vulnerable, Mrs. Hetzler made me feel seen and important by letting me help her. Her friendly and humorous nature made the library a safe haven. This feeling was never more evident than on the morning of 9/11. As chaotic images of the tragedy flickered on the television, she muted the sound. She explained that sometimes, to truly understand something, we need to separate the visual from the audio. In that quiet space, we watched and discussed the events, sharing our fears and confusion. Mrs. Hetzler didn't just teach us how to find a book; she taught us how to process a tragedy and find calm in the storm. Her lesson on emotional regulation and critical thinking has stayed with me far longer than any research skill ever could.
