01/10

Introduction of my research-Developing the ability of playing by ear

This project aims to explore the ability of playing by ear in order to design a creative and stimulating teaching approach for the development of the skill in piano lessons. The goal is to devise effective strategies for piano instructors, offering guidance on how to effectively advance the abilities of their students. Consistent with Woody’s ideas, playing by ear have described by educators as a relevant developmental prerequisit to becoming a truly fluent music reader. Nevertheless, making sounds by ear is often just the initial and playful approach to music, and its significance diminishes considerably in education as the skill level increases. In fact, one must not forget the crucial role of the skill, that is the direct connection between music and player (without any interference like the score). As matter of fact, it is a personal motivation that drives this work. When I finished my studies as a music performer, I felt that I only knew how to recite beautiful poems in the language of music very well, but that I did not know how to speak the language. I felt that I did not master all the language skills. Now I consider that knowing how to interpret music is just another skill. We live in a changing, fast-moving and challenging world, so I believe that the musician who will be most competent is the one who will be able to master the language and communicate. As a teacher, I would like to transmit these values and give tools rather than a lot of information.

For the purpose of including the ability of playing by ear in class, in order to become a balanced musician, the following question has been created as a working guide: How to develop the ability of playing by ear to become an integral musician? Therefore, numerous terms and fundamental concepts require additional clarification to firmly establish the foundation of this research. The starting point of this work is the definition of the skill itself: “When musicians play “by ear,” they are reproducing music they have learned aurally, without having seen or read the notation in any form of visual representation.” It is also necessary to introduce the framework in which this research will be developed. In line with the theoretical model of McPherson, it is possible to examine the relationship among five different aspects of musical performance: sight-reading, performing rehearsed music, playing from memory, playing by ear, and improvising. What is more, it is demonstrated that cultivating the skill of playing by ear, alongside other skills, enhance the learning processes. Besides these studies, the perspectives of Gordon, Kodaly and other new perspectives related to aural skills will be reviewed and compared.

The methodology employed in this project is essentially action research, recognizing it as an approach that involves simultaneously investigating and resolving an issue. The first step is orientation, incorporating relevant readings into my work and forming a science-based plan with a comprehensive perspective on the topic. Secondly, because I have never been trained in the skill of playing by ear, I have started with my own experimentation and documented my personal case study. Then, I have immersed myself in action (teaching), intervention (implementing new materials and techniques, as well as observing their changes ) and activity design (materials and strategies). All through practice and reflection. The target of this research will be 3 students in their adult life, with little musical background. It will be through working with different musical styles (from classical to pop) and over a period of three months of classes. All classes will be recorded and critically analysed in order to obtain valuable data. Finally, conclusions will be drawn by returning to the initial question and its possible solution, while also providing a foundation for future research approaches.

In terms of documentation, I will draw on my own reading of reliable sources such as books and articles. I will also be in contact with other teachers and students, as well as to observe many classes and gather data. Moreover, my own experience teaching will be essential to extract information.

The presentation of this work will be in the form of a "Research Catalogue". The intention is to present the present project as a set of strategies for the piano teacher, in the form of a website.

Though my prototype wasn’t an exact representation of what my PIA will be, ARTScapade gave me substantial insight on how to run an arts festival on my own at my school. I had a team to assist with ARTscapade, which won’t be the case for my PIA. The formula and process for running these kinds of festivals is the same, and requires the same kind of organization and planning. I had never planned a festival like this before, and it is an important thing to be able to do for my career as a teacher for community building with other schools. After I host my first strings festival for Dutch international schools, I would like to host one for a wider community of international schools, called AMIS: Association of Music in International Schools.

Another thought on maybe focussing on co-writing (instead of general Songwriting) in my thesis: isn’t writing in the context of a school not always a little bit co-writing? Because as a student you present your work and you follow up with the teacher’s remarks in mind. Ok, it’s not litteraly co-writing as we know it (and I will also never claim copyright on the songs of my students!), but still it reminds me often of how I co-write in a room with others (“we need a pre-chorus here”, “I feel like the melody is not going anywhere on this point in the song”, “can you make a variation on these lyrics to create a second verse”, etc.).
