Introduction

When we learn about art music history, there seems to be one common variable: white men. We do not hear much about women or people of color, even though they definitely played their part in classical music. We always hear the names Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven when discussing classical music. The two orchestras I chose were the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. The New York Philharmonic is doing a series of concerts centered around Star Wars and then after that is over they are doing concerts centered around classical composers. So they try to appeal to a modern audience while still playing pieces from the canon. However, the Princeton Symphony orchestra is playing mainly Bach and Beethoven.

"The stereotype of the solitary genius disempowers women and minorities who do not see people of their gender or ethnicity included in the canon of great composers" -Sara Haefeli.

-Western classical music has not left much space to allow for those of different ethnicities or of the female gender to compose music. When people of color have tried to compose music under this genre, they have said that they were simply making 'urban' music opposed to classical music.
