Using poetic forms, he and his friend Du Fu (712–770) were two of the most significant figures of the Tang dynasty's "Golden Age of Chinese Poetry," which saw the flourishing of Chinese poetry. 

There are about 1,000 poems that Li is credited with writing. The most significant Tang dynasty collection includes his poems.The anthology 'Three Hundred Tang Poems', first published in the 18th century, contains 34 of Li Bai's poems.

His poems started to appear in translation in Europe about the same period. The poetry served as models for praising the joys of drinking, loneliness, the richness of nature, and friendship.

Raising my head, I gaze at the moonlight,
Lowering my head, I think of my home village."


The background
The poem was inspired by Li's experiences as a Confucian scholar isolated from his hometown. As part of their responsibilities and loyalty as courtiers or deserving subjects to the Emperor of China, scholars and merchants associated with the court frequently stayed home from their hometowns for lengthy periods. 

Although family devotion was one of the pillars of Confucian thinking and stressed the value of embracing and honouring one's ancestors and roots, it was also expected in ancient Confucian ceremonies to remain loyal to the Emperor and comply with the Emperor's demands. 

Li Bai fulfils his obligations of loyalty to the Emperor through the poem by expressing his desire for his hometown.The poem does refer to the Mid-Autumn Festival and the August moon. The Mid-Autumn celebration, traditionally connected with family reunions, is significant in Chinese culture because of its commitment to Chinese family values. 

Li reflects on the impossibility of a family reunion due to the significance of the Emperor's demand, but he emphasises the value of cherishing one's roots despite this obstacle.

The festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month of the  Chinese Lunar calendar (the night of the full moon between early September and October).

Mid-Autumn Festival is a day for friends and family to gather together, offer thanks to the fall harvest, worship the moon, and pray for longevity and good fortune.

This holiday falls on the day of a full moon, making rooftops a great place to spend the evening. The Mid-Autumn Festival moon is traditionally said to be brighter and fuller than at any other time of year.
