I've had similar experiences like Jeannette did with going to the hospital. My family differs from Jeanette's because if one of my siblings were to crack their head open my parents would definitely take us to the hospital. I have heard of people whose kids have been hurt and they never go to the hospital because they don't have insurance. Something I learned about the family is how the parents are really careless and irresponsible.

  • The context to this quote is Jeannette's dad Rex was drinking before this and previously had lost this job. The family is now moving to a different town. Jeanette's mom is currently pregnant with Maureen for supposedly 14 months. Rex is driving drunk and Jeannette's mom jumps out of the car. Rex then starts insulting his wife saying "You crazy bitch... Get your goddamn ass back in this car"(Walls,43). This quote stood out to me because Rex was calling his wife some very bad words that any woman should never be called especially his wife.

  • The recurring patterns in the novel the Glass castle is the author repeats the name The Glass Castle, after the family moves or a traumatic experience happens. For example when they moved from the trailer park to escape bill collectors, Jeannette's dad Rex would tell her and her siblings about the Glass Castle. This is to distract the kids so there minds wouldnt be on them moving all the time.

  • The author uses Jeannette to portray her father Rex as a very good person and Jeannette's hero. Jeannette uses words like handsome to make and image of Rex being a very good person. When in reality he is an alcoholic.

  • A particular event in the book was when Jeannette burned herself while boiling hot dogs and was sent to the hospital for awhile. The author's purpose in this was to show how poor and irresponsible and selfish her parents were.

    1. The meaning of a text changes as you reread because you can see details one didn't see before. One can summarize the text after rereading the book.

    2. Readers from different time periods and different ages may interpret a text differently because of different perspectives. For example a person from the 1800s may interpret something different due to the time period and historical context and what was occurring during the time. Compared to a person from modern times may interpret a text differently.

    3. My personal experiences have helped me understand the position and emotions going through Jeannette and her siblings when their parents are fighting. It helps better understand what the characters are experiencing and how the author uses the characters to portray certain emotions or lessons.

I also chose education because in this part of the book the kids were finally going to school again. Unfortunately Jeannette didn't have the best experience but the kids are in school.

  • In what ways does capitalism (our free market economy) benefit or challenge characters in our memoirs?

    I think capitalism negatively impacts the characters in the book. This is because of how Jeannette's family is very poor. The way capitalism works is private businesses are able to thrive and make as much money as possible while poor people dont really benefit as much. This relates to Rex and how he somewhat makes an effort to get jobs but many of them are unskilled labor that doesn't pay very much. The poor get screwed over. Jeannette's family doesn't get any free medical care or any government assistance the family is all on there own. In this case capitalism is not a good thing for this family.

For one her grandma passed away, fortunately they inherited a house in Arizona. For the first time Jeannette is living in an actual home and her father finally has a decent paying job and they finally have money. Rex's addiction to alcohol gets in the way of this though. Rex loses his job and all he does is drink. On Christmas day Rex drinks a lot and gets so drunk he burns the Christmas tree and the presents underneath. The next day Jeannette asks her dad "Do you think you could maybe stop drinking"(Walls).This stood out to me because for a child to tell her father to stop drinking is a very big thing. Rex had caused so much destruction in Jeannette life that poor Jeannette had to ask her father to stop drinking.

I live in a neighborhood that is primarily Mexican with practically nobody else. The few others are somewhat outcasts. I know how it feels to have lots of drunks in the street and not being able to really go on walks because its too dangerous. Unlike Jeannette's parents my parents care about my safety so they never really let me out in the street by myself until I was older.

  • What do the characters’ emotions and behaviors reveal about their psychological states? 

    • I think Rosemary Jeannette's mom's emotions and behavior reveal she is in a careless state. Rosemary's reaction and behavior towards Uncle Stanley for sexually assaulting her daughter was disappointing and unacceptable to say the least. This shows how selfish and careless of a mom she is. This woman doesn't care for her children. Jeannette is starting to realize this and tries to stick up to her mom saying she must leave Rex to qualify for welfare. Rosemary refuses to get a job which I think is out of laziness because she does nothing all day.Rosemary doesn't deserve to be a mom.
