On the other hand, running the exhibition inside the POI could provide the school with more structure which is necessary for such a big task. A common transdisciplinary theme could help in promoting student collaboration, sharing of ideas and reflection. Inside the POI provides structure for students and teachers and might make it easier for a teacher to differentiate and support students. Students have experienced units of inquiry during their PYP education and can find comfort in the known structure and routines. From an organizational standpoint, having the exhibition inside the POI might make it easier for the whole learning community to collaborate. It could be such a big task! With so many projects, it could become difficult to facilitate and truly support and collaborate with all learners. For teachers, it would require a lot of planning with the entire teaching team, ensuring any specialist teachers, language teachers etc are all on the same page. An exhibition outside of the POI could also be too demanding for students. Students would require a strong understanding of the elements of the PYP, including the themes, ATL’s, Key Concepts and LP. Connecting to multiple themes could be overwhelming. Also, if the task extends for a greater length of time, students may also lose interest in the task and engagement could suffer. Finally, finding time outside the POI might be difficult. Time constraints could lead to challenges during the school year as well as for the exhibition unit.
With that said, by choosing to have the exhibition outside of the POI, there is more opportunity for student agency and choice. This will allow students the freedom to choose how they want to approach this task. It does pose some potential problems, timing is difficult, it means the other UOI's are shorter and as we all know time is something that every teacher struggles with. Getting everything done. One unit will run as a year long unit and this will hopefully tie in with other units of work. However, currently it is not making genuine links to the other UOI's which makes it seem very separate.
