He wants the best for his community .By doing so he helps find witchcraft as so said in the play. As the play progress and he is called upon during the time when Betty was not awaking. Which then he investigates what has happened to Betty and what was the cause of it. He believes the girls when they start calling out the names of the individuals. He believes them because he was to fight off the Devil in the town. As the play goes on he slowly begins to doubt what he is believing in. Many people are being hanged for being accused of witchcraft. For then he becomes confused and overwhelmed on what to believe.  By the end of the play when so many have been hanged Hale feels guilty. He feels as if it was his fault that so many innocent people were being hanged. Hale overall wanted the best for his community but he failed to do so. All he wanted to do is get rid of the Devil. Which Reverend Hale believes that he is engaged within "The Crucible" a literal battle with devil and witches.
