As we have started getting close to the end of our “Pedagogy Course”, now seems to be the right time to go ahead with the Edupreneurship module. From discussing the overall structure of the module, we understood that it is composed of three themes: i. Market oriented Education; ii. Intellectual Capital and Innovation Management; iii. Leadership and Interpersonal Skills.

Theme One: Market Oriented Education

As we can make it out from the term, edupreneurship is a combination of enterprise and education through establishing the practice of entrepreneurship in the institutes. The application of a proper market-oriented system in higher institutes is a necessity to relate education with the marketplace in different fields of study. To understand the significance of entrepreneurship in education, we first discussed the entrepreneurial skills and characteristics of an entrepreneur.

These skills could be summarized in being creative and having the ability to effectively communicate, criticize, analyze and solve the problems, and most importantly to have an entrepreneurial mindset, such as being proactive, risk taker, decision maker, motivator, adaptable, independent, and confident. No doubt, the political, cultural, and other community backgrounds should be kept in mind in order to build a genuine entrepreneurship framework to help the new generation develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

If we dig further into the term, we come to understand that entrepreneurship i. starts with an idea that should be evaluated in terms of applicability, originality…etc., ii. followed by market research like presence of other competitors, their values, and customer demand, iii. Then comes to prototyping in which an interdisciplinary involvement plays a huge role in its success. Production of a prototype can give us an idea about how costly, demanded and practical is our idea for marketing. Then, iv. The last stage comes which is the production and advertising of our product for which we may focus on efficiency, long term effect, slogan, catalogue, warranty…etc.

After comprehending the entrepreneurial qualities, importance, and parts, it was time for us to learn the possible ways of orienting our education system towards marketing. We, the future teachers, have to efficiently contribute in designing a learning process that focuses on the social and economic needs of the society through replacing rote learning and jealousy with competency, problem solving, and collaboration, and more importantly, implanting an entrepreneurial mindset in our students through business ventures, with the hints from the video of the power of an entrepreneurial mindset, shared with us by our instructor, Mr. Miran. Market-orientation demands a flexible education system, enhancing the interaction of the academic staff with the market to serve as a link between students and corporate clients. The market-academicians engagement in the process is necessary to develop a genuine understanding by the teaching staff to fulfill the market needs through quality teaching and research. In this session, we thoroughly discussed the need of getting rid of the government control and being mainly funded by private sectors and from the institute’s own productivity. However, market-oriented education has become a must to progress a community and fulfill its economic and social needs, it is surely not void of drawbacks. The enforcement of a pure market orientation by the universities will lead to a dangerous deterioration of the quality of the offered programs. To avoid this downside of market orientation management, some sort of censorship needed is needed to maintain the rigor of the contents and monitor the honesty of the institutes while describing the learning environment and outcomes of a particular course.

To conclude, this theme opened our eyes to see the importance of edupreneurship and market orientation, however, we also got familiar with its disadvantages that wee need to avoid in our future classes.

Theme Three: Leadership and Interpersonal Skills

Due to its highly importance for us as future teachers, we studied this theme before the other two. Communication is the most important skill a teacher needs in order to be successful in his/her career. This skill is divided into verbal (words) and nonverbal (body language). Verbal communication is about the words either in spoken or written form. It includes intrapersonal (with self), interpersonal (between two people), small group (3-12 individuals), and public communication (a single sender to several receivers). Verbal communications are usually accompanied by nonverbal ones which are crucial in delivering our message.

The main focus in this theme was about how to deal with our stress and make our talks and body language impactful. Although, the purpose behind our speech (Ex., entertainment, informing, persuading…etc) changes the way we present it, there are several essential points that any communicator basically needs. To cover these points we, each group, were assigned with a different video link to watch and then present it to our peers. However, my group assignment was about the science of persuasion, I personally watched other videos as well, including self-confidence, leadership, teamworking, emotional intelligence, and public speaking. The rich content of those videos gave me very useful hints that a public figure needs to effectively communicate. Furthermore, we also discussed other required elements for an effective communication in detail, such as open-mindedness, adaptability, clarity, constructive feedback, empathy, active listening, and patience.

And, as presentations will become one of the most common forms of communication in our academic life, we dealt with this form of communication in more detail. We discussed its types and its main elements, such as the presenter, context, message, and audience. This was followed by giving suggestions to overcome panic, like self-preparation in terms of knowledge, punctuality, time management, practice, and many more. Also, not to forget, the honesty and compatibility between our verbal and nonverbal communications while interacting with our audience can play a huge role to smoothly deliver our message.

Overall, this theme specifically worked on improving our skills and capabilities to be a successful communicator in our academic, social, and even political path.

After the usual revision of the previous material, this theme started with discussing the intellectual capital. Intellectual capital refers to a combination of intangible assets like abilities, skills and the know-how or any other form of useful knowledge that functionalize companies and organizations. Amongst the different forms of Intellectual Capital, we focused on three of them which were human capital, relational capital, and structural capital.

In fact, it was my first time to hear human capital term and I thought it to be same as human resources. However, I later understood that, while human resources is more concerned with the job done by individuals, human capital is more focused on the abilities and skills they have. This fruitful discussion started with drawing our attention towards a famous quote of Steve Jobs “It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do”. To mention some, these intangible capacities include creativity, education, experience, training, wisdom, judgement…etc. And, the real value of their assets could be measured through their efficiency, productivity, attitudes, roles in developing the firm…etc. A rich human capital leads to a higher performance, efficiency, maintenance & sustainability, economic growth, and strategic renewal and innovation.

The second important category, relational capital, is of no less importance. As it could be inferred from the term, relational capital refers to the internal and external relationships, intimacies, and interactions of an organization. It embraces several relational categories, such as internal sectors, corporate identity, stakeholders, suppliers, contracts, and most importantly customers. This capital could be mainly measured through customers’ compliant, satisfaction, retention rate, database, and needs identification. Amongst the comments given during the session to enhance the identity of institutes were making relationships with other corporates, arrangement of international and local events such as workshops, seminars, conferences and symposiums, research development, and upgrading facilities.

In order to get a proper benefit from human and relational capitals, a firm needs a rich structural/organizational capital. This form of capital comprises procedures, routines, databases, cultures, systems…etc of the firm. Some of these might become part of the firm’s identity and right of owning. The rigor of an organizational capital could be measured through evaluating documentation services, intellectual property and resources, strategy, management system, research projects and so on.

In a nutshell, the success, progress, and renewability of any corporate lies in the quality of its intellectual capitals, including human, relational, and structural capitals. Thus, they should be deeply researched and focused on while setting up any firm.
