Meet Alex, a seventh-grade student who has been struggling with math, particularly with understanding fractions and decimals. Despite his struggles, Alex shows a strong interest in science and is very curious about how things work. He often asks insightful questions in science class and enjoys hands-on experiments. However, his difficulty with math concepts has affected his confidence, and he often feels frustrated and anxious during math lessons. His parents are supportive but also concerned about his performance and self-esteem

Strengths:

1. Strong interest and curiosity in science. 2. Good at asking insightful questions.

3. Enjoys hands-on learning and experiments.

4. Supportive family environment. Struggles and Challenges:

1. Difficulty understanding fractions and decimals.

2. Low confidence in math, leading to anxiety.

3. Frustration during math lessons.

4. Inconsistent performance in math assessments.

Insights and Reflections:

1. Differentiated Instruction: Tailoring lessons to meet Alex's individual needs can help him grasp difficult concepts. Using visual aids and manipulatives for fractions and decimals can make abstract ideas more concrete.

2. Growth Mindset: Encouraging Alex to develop a growth mindset can help him understand that his abilities can improve with effort and practice. Praising his effort rather than just his results can foster resilience.

3. Collaborative Learning: Pairing Alex with peers who have a stronger grasp of math can provide him with support and different perspectives. Group work and peer tutoring can enhance his understanding and confidence.

4. Integrating Interests: Incorporating his love for science into math lessons can make learning more engaging. For example, using scientific data that involves fractions and decimals can show the real-world application of math.

5. Positive Reinforcement: Consistent positive reinforcement and celebrating small victories can boost Alex's confidence. Setting achievable goals and recognizing his progress can motivate him to keep improving.

Philosophical Foundation and Theories:

1. Constructivist Theory: Emphasizes hands-on learning and building knowledge through experience, which aligns with Alex's love for experiments.

2. Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development: Focuses on the importance of social interaction and scaffolding, supporting the idea of peer tutoring and collaborative learning.

3. Growth Mindset Theory by Carol Dweck: Encourages resilience and the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.

4. Differentiated Instruction: Addresses diverse learning needs by providing different pathways to understanding.

5. Positive Reinforcement: Based on behaviorist principles, this approach can help in building a positive learning environment and boosting Alex's confidence. These insights and approaches can be integrated into a comprehensive plan to support Alex in overcoming his challenges and building a stronger foundation in math.

Bailee is a third-grade Mexican-American bilingual student whose family just recently moved in from another state in the middle of the school year. Although she was born in the U.S., her parents are both from Mexico. Her first language was Spanish. She is fluent in conversational Spanish and English but struggles with academic English. I touch on 5 insights, explain the insight, and talk about how each insight will support Bailee.

The student I have chosen for this case-study we will go by “Joshua”. Joshua is a kindergarten student who is diagnosed with autism and ADHD. He has struggled to complete certain classroom behaviors such as sitting in his seat or one place for an extended period of time, he has a hard time expressing himself, he has difficulty following directions and will often scribble on his papers. Joshua has also shown difficulty with following directions by walking and crawling around the classroom and shoveling items around the classroom. For example, one day he went through every cabinet in the play kitchen and threw every item he could find onto the floor during class time. He will also make loud noises consistently at times when trying to teach. We have observed that he does quite well in the morning time but often after recess or lunch he has a hard time in the classroom environment. We should be aiming for integration for as many students as possible and I believe that he can thrive in a regular classroom eventually. I will be exploring five key insights that may aid in Joshua’s situation.

Differentiated instruction and inclusion

Special education (students with disabilities)

Making learning personal and meaningful

Multiple intelligences

Role of bullying

This podcast is about EL children coming from another country like arabia, china or with parents who are immigrants and they don't have the extra support students who have spoken English their whole life have. What are we doing to help these students thrive? Are they being tested low because they are actually low or because they have a language barrier? We as teachers should learn about their culture and language to make them feel welcomed and understood.

In this case study podcast, I will talk about a student I had the privilege of teaching, Mike. Mike is a third grader who suffers from the inability and desire to make and maintain positive relationships in school with his peers and teachers. Due to his traumatic childhood, he sees no benefit in positive relationships, being respectful, and maintaining a good attitude on the daily. Mike had a tough childhood, tougher than most third graders, but his strength is his positive attitude despite all the adversity. A few years ago, Mike and his family were homeless and living in a shelter. Mike and his family are doing great, but the last few years have left a lasting imprint on his life and behaviors at school. I relate specific learning in the textbook, such as Classism and the teacher's belief, while incorporating the idea of the Pygmalion Effect, what it means, and how it can be a factor in Mike's daily life in the classroom. Thank you for listening! Enjoy! :)

Key Insights:

Classism and the teacher's beliefs

Bullying

Talking about bullying to students

Discrimination and Bias

Connection before content
