During the service opportunity today, I got the opportunity to meet plenty of new people and experience a new culture. I had the pleasure of working the window to serve food to the customers, and I was shocked to see how many people were being fed. There was one man who needed to feed 10 people, none of which were kids. This experience allowed me to see the struggles of the hungry and opened my eyes to the severity of the hunger problem around the world.

While at the food bank I learned that a Lot of people who may not look like they have been sleeping on the streets and how our image of people that go to a food bank are raggedy but they are really just normal people who may be going through a rough patch really need our help. I never have been to a food bank and today was really an eye opener for me.

Today at flagstaff family food center, I worked alongside both my brothers and people who do this on a weekly basis. Working with my brothers, we all participated in different stations to work towards the same goal. We got things done and enjoyed what we were doing understanding WHY we are working so hard. Truly finding something you love to participate in will make you work 10x harder to achieve it and that means so much more than we think to those we serve.

Today was our third day out here in Arizona. Today we took a hiking trip to Sunset Crater which is an inactive volcano. We got to explore and observe the former lava river that ripped through the mountain so long ago. We then got to explore the town of Flagstaff which was a great time. I found a great music store that I liked a lot. It was interesting to see how the locals integrated their customs into their guitars. I had a great day and I definitely will not forget these two experiences!

- Kevin Clark

Today was a very eventful day. We went to the Grand Canyon and then Sunset Volcano Crater and finally walk around Flagstaff and explore. While Grand Canyon wasn’t what we expected due to the weather we still made the best of it. I’m excited to go back and see it fully. The best part of my day was going to the volcano. It was pretty cool because we could see where the lava flowed. The whole area was different and very interesting. I think being from the east coast and not having any volcanoes made the whole experience more impactful.

To start off day 3 we woke up extra early so we could drive two hours to the Grand Canyon where we planed on staying most of our day. When we got there, it was covered in snow and we could barely see the canyon. Even though this was unexpected, we still were able to come up with a exiting plan for the rest of the day. We went to sunset crater which was a erupted volcano from 1000 years ago. We got to hike through the eroded rocks and see the interesting plants and species living in the crater. Then we went to the all you can eat buffet Sizzlers which was a great experience. We got to meet some of the locals and eat great food with our brothers. Overall, day 3 was a good day even though it didn’t go as planned.

Today, we spent most of our time volunteering at the Flagstaff Food Distribution warehouse. I spent time interacting with those being served by the food bank, and packaged snack bags for those in the community. It was truly an amazing experience to interact with the people we are impacting. It showed me that all kinds of people are helped by food banks. We also cooked dinner in our groups today. Having a budget and walking through the store made me and my brothers realize how much a family meal costs to make. I feel very blessed to have had this experience and will not forget it.

I was working along side with my friends the entire time. This made our service experience that much better! It was also really special to see the direct impact you had on the people you were serving. For lunch we went to Buffalo park for lunch. It was an amazing view! After we ate lunch we went back to the Food Bank to make more meals for people. To cap off the day we had a good competition. Some of the food that was made was phenomenal! There were fried oreos, chicken cutlets, chicken parmesan, and bacon brussels sprouts. It was a very fun way to end the day with a little competition.

When I looked at it, it didn’t look real it was that insane. There was one moment where we could see a helicopter in the distance and it was the size of a sprinkle. It really put into perspective how big the Grand Canyon really is, and it blew my mind even more. While Tuesday was breathtaking, our views were diminished by the heavy fog, snowfall, and low visibility. Today, we had the opportunity for redemption and it was worth every second of waiting. The Grand Canyon was truly breathtaking. The views were stellar and the size of the canyon was impossible to comprehend.

I’d like to start this reflection with a huge thank you to Profe Lohse, Father Drennen, Sean, and the Rustic Pathways team. Being in Arizona has been a cool experience and I’m glad I decided to go on the trip. Service this week has been fulfilling, knowing that our work of packing and preparing food for the less fortunate will benefit the people of Flagstaff. As a group, we worked efficiently and effectively, waking up early and coming back home as if we just ran a marathon (I know Im over exaggerating but it truly was tiring). As for the Grand Canyon, well, wow. It is truly incredible how that was naturally formed. It goes to show how beautiful nature is and it felt refreshing to embrace the mundane. Nothing better than hanging your feet off a cliff 5000 feet above the Canyons crevasses. The gang has had a great week and it seems that everyone is having a good time. Can’t wait to get back home and share the experience!

Today was definitely my favorite day on the entire trip. We woke up early and made our way towards a fascinating Native American castle that dates back for centuries. Then, we went to the beautiful town of Sedona, where we ate lunch and walked around. We then went on a scenic hike up Bell Rock, which overlooked the entire area of Sedona. The amazing natural beauty and the nice people of Sedona truly made this day absolutely unforgettable.

We started our day by visiting the Montezuma Castle. It was awesome to see such an amazing and impressive structure built by the Native Americans. Next, we visited the town of Sedona. The people, food, stores and overall vibe of the town is amazing and I definitely want to go back. We ended our outing with a hike on Bell Rock. By far the most exhilarating and fun hiking so far.

Today at Sedona was definitely the highlight of my trip, and I think a lot of my classmates felt the same way. We had perfect weather, I was in a T-Shirt most of the day which was a nice change of pace from the weather back home. Hiking up and down Bell Rock with my brothers was an experience that I will cherish forever. The town of Sedona was also a very cool spot, it was unlike anything you would find back home. All in all, it was a day that I will look back on with very fond memories.

Today was a great day in Sedona. We started off the day by visiting the Montezuma castle. This was fascinating because it was cool reading about how people lived in it so long ago. The highlight of the day for me was exploring downtown Sedona. We had a really nice lunch at an authentic Mexican restaurant and were able to get clothes in different stores. After that, we went to Bell Rock which was a really fun hike. It was more of a climb rather than a walk which was very different and the views were very good. Overall, today was a great day.

We stopped for some grub at Don Diego. The food was very filling. Next we hiked up Bell Rock. The hike was unique in the sense that there was a lot of free climbing. Sedona would have to be my highlight for the week.

The service trip to Flagstaff was amazing. I had such a good time. The service allowed me to become more aware of poverty and food insecurity not only in Flagstaff, but around the world. It made me think about areas that do not have access to food banks like the ones we worked at. I have become more mindful about my actions when it comes to food and I look forward to doing more service. The sight-seeing was amazing aswell. I got to see a lot of places I have wanted to go to for a very long time. The hiking was awesome and everything about the area was beautiful. Lastly, I got to build many long-lasting friendships with fellow Friars I never imagined I would. I became closer to people who spend time hanging out with much different groups than I do. This trip was a great time to branch out and get closer to new people.

Hearing that I was chosen to go on the Flagstaff, Arizona service trip made me quite excited, as I had never been that far west before. When we first arrived I was unsure if I was going to enjoy my time there, as I was feeling homesick. As the days went on they got better and better. I really enjoyed helping people in need at the food bank and all of the beautiful, scenic locations we visited. This trip meant a lot to me, as I learned a-lot about food insecurity and how common it is in America. My main takeaways are to not take what I have in life for granted, and that food insecurity can effect everybody, no matter where they are in life.

This service trip taught me many things and will be one of my best memories from Malvern. The service we did in Flagstaff gave me a new perspective and appreciation. It showed me that anyone can be food insecure and you do not have to look the part. Secondly, I gained a further appreciation for what I have and for those who give it to me. The time spent in nature was also very refreshing. Being “away” from the world and enjoying God’s work was amazing. I hope I can keep the values and perspectives I gained from this trip and continue to apply them to my everyday life.

This service trip to Arizona taught me a lot about something that I knew little bit about. It was also one of my most memorable things to come out of Malvern. Food Kitchens and working there and being able to put a smile on someone face when they get food made me really happy. And I went back to where we were stying and that night I thought why am I not doing more to help the community around me. Even though we lived in a very privileged area I have learned that you never know who is food insecure. This changed my viewpoint and made me want to help out. Not every person that came to get food looked like they needed help, or wore the torn up clothes, they were everyday people that no one thought actually needed the help. And I think that this made me think Wow. Through this trip I learned a lot about how I could help in my communtiy and what I could do to start.

Over this week in arizona, I learned that I had a whole new set of Malvern brothers to interact and spend time with. I learned that my brothers could cook, and it was something I was able to ask them about. I learned that some of my brothers were musically inclined, and that was another topic of conversation. I formed plenty of new friendships and learned all about hiking and I found a potential new hobby. All of this occurred while I was making an impact on thousands of families by serving at the food kitchens. I was able to connect with the recipients of the food and establish a means of communication with members of a different culture. I spent this trip forming bonds with my brothers and members of a different community, and I got to help people along the way. I learned a lot on this trip and would happily go again.
