The Beginning

The beginning of the French Revolution starts with the Estates General. The Estates General is how the people are divided up in France, which is of three parts. The first, second, and third estate. The first estate includes the church officials and the clergy who don't pay taxes and live in the Palace of Versailles. They own 10% of land in France, yet they make up only 1% of France's population. The second estate includes nobles, who make up 10% of the population and don't pay taxes. They also live in the Palace of Versailles with the first estate and don't pay taxes. Finally, the third estate is made up of the rest of the population (80%), who are commoners. The commoners are the ones who pay taxes, and of course, the ones who are the poorest, living on the streets, and eating sawdust bread. Also, the voting between the three estates is one vote per estate, so the first and second estates always outvote the third estate. Obviously, this "Estates General" thing is very unfair, so, the three estates decide to meet up at the National Assembly in May of 1789. The National Assembly happens, but after a while, the doors are locked, having only the first and second estate inside. So, the third estate decide to gather at a nearby tennis court instead, and take the Tennis Court of Oath. The Tennis Court of Oath promises not to disband until a constitution for the free people of France has been written.

The Middle

After the Tennis Court of Oath, Marie Antoinette decides to spend all of France's money on herself (because she's just a girl in the city who needs to buy everything, which I relate 💯). While she's out spending all of France's money and putting them in debt, King Louis XVI isn't doing anything. He literally lets the first and second estates walk all over him because he doesn't want to disappoint them. Because of this, the third estate is scared because they feel like this is an attack on them from King Louis XVI, and they start to fear that the National Assembly is going to dissolve. So, they decide to storm the Bastille in July 1789 in an attempt to rise up against the soldiers at the Bastille. They do succeed in freeing political prisoners and gaining weapons from the armory. After this, women of the third estate get so sick and tired of eating sawdust bread that they decide to march all the way to the Palace of Versailles. They march there because they are mad over the price of bread, and they want to see the queen, Marie Antoinette and confront her of spending all of France's money on herself and putting them in debt. After the storming, a new form of government is formed as a legislative government. The legislative government had the idea that King Louis XVI will work with the people, which obviously doesn't work like any other government during the French Revolution. Now, Robespierre, aka the "incorruptible" is here, and he is an advocate for the third estate. He believed that France should establish a republic form of government, which he does lead France to a new government called the First Republic. The First Republic supported the people's rights and put the government in charge of executing King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, who were charged for treason and attempt of counter-revolution.

Now, remember the "incorruptible" Robespierre guy? He ends up being corrupt. So corrupt that his reign is called the Reign of Terror. Robespierre said the execution of the king and queen was necessary for the creation of the republic he envisioned. During the Reign of Terror, 70,000 people were put to death by the guillotine and Robespierre because HE BECOMES CORRUPT!!! 🙀 🙀 Because he gained too much power for himself, he decides to quit the republic form of government and become a dictator until the military overthrows him. Now, the next form of government is the Directory, which consists of an upper and lower house. The lower house proposed laws for the government and the upper house either accepted or vetoed the laws. Robespierre now is put to death on the guillotine on July 28, 1794 and ends the Reign of Terror. So, now who is going to control France? Napoleon is!! Napoleon was a military genius who staged a coup d'etat in 1799 to overthrow the Directory government. He invaded and attempted to colonize Egypt, conquering Austria, Prussia, Portugal, and Spain and put his family in charge of those countries. He also attempted to unify Europe under French rule and used the continental system to weaken England in war. Most importantly, Napoleon's political changes to France included the Napoleonic code, which simplified laws for France, the elimination of the estates system, and allowed freedom of religion. He also restored a centralized government to France, increased reforms in education for men, improved relations with the Pope, and he even sold territory in North America to the U.S to help fund campaigns. But, this peace didn't last. Napoleon got ahead of himself by stretching his limits in Europe and was defeated twice when he invaded Russia and was exiled in prison and died on May 5, 1821. His legacy that he left behind was that France dominated continental Europe, and he installed his own rulers of the nations he conquered, one of which included his own brother the king of Spain.
