F. Scott Fitzgerald contributes to Modernism from his literacy book, The Great Gatsby. The book defines modernism because it reflects upon the upper and middle classes, individuality, the fragmentation within society, and the culture that was around during that time period (1920s).

Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea is a literacy example that reflected modernist themes.

A Stream-of-Consciousness is a person's flow of thought, which may have no coherent structure. Basically, letting the mind wander without he or she editing.

Stream-of-Consciousness is a characteristic of Modernism because it allowed the reader to capture the sense of the character's consciousness, point of view, and thought process.

An example that captures stream-of-consciousness is the novel and movie, American Psycho.
