  • A plague that spread across Europe.
  • There are 3 forms of the Black Death
    • The Bubonic Plague (Attacks lymphatic system) 
      • Symptoms include: Nausea, fever, exploding black cysts on the neck, groin and armpits, and death. 
      • Most common form of the plague, some people survived. 
    • The Pneumonic (Attacks the lungs)
      • Symptoms: Fever, Cough, Trouble Breathing, and death. 
      • Second most common, few people survived.
    • The Septicemic (Attacks the blood)
      • Symptoms: Fever, and death. Dubbed the "Sneaky Plague" 
      • Least common form of the plague, almost no one survived.

  • EVERYONE was impacted by the plague. The plague attacked everyone who was exposed. 
  • Serfs were most likely to be exposed because of poor sanitation and malnutrition.
    • Serfs did not have indoor or even outdoor plumbing. They did their business in a bucket and threw it out their windows into the streets. This means that the streets were filled with sewage, and subsequently bacteria that lives in sewage.

  • The Black Death spread along trade routes. 
    1. Infected Rats carrying Infected fleas boarded trade ships. 
    2. Trade ships showed up in Sicily with dead or dying crew. 
    3. Sicily said "No Thank you" and sent the goods back on the ships. But it was too late. 
    4. The plague continued to spread along trade routes.

  • The people of Europe had theories as to why people were dying. Which of these sounds most probable to you? 
    • The planets were out of alignment. 
    • God is mad at them
    • It is all the Jews' fault
    • Infected people, clothing, and animals
  • The people of Europe didn't know what to do, but they knew they had to do something. Here are a few things that they tried. 
    • Pomanders - A pouch of flowers to cover up the smell. Theory: if I don't smell like death, I won't be dying anymore. 
      • Story Time: I had this issue with my car about a year ago. My car was making an awful noise, but the noise went away when I turned the radio on! 
      • Did my noise really go away? No, but I couldn't hear it anymore. Did it mean that my car wasn't going to break down? No. It broke down a week later. 
      • Did the Pomanders make the Plague go away? NO! 

    • Eating a Mixture of Molasses & Chopped Snake
      • Not sure if this hurt, but it didn't help. 

    • Repentance: Praying until you're sorry.

    • Flagellants: Kneeling in the (sewer covered) streets and beating yourself with a Flogger (Like a whip but has 6-8 short strands instead of one long strand, and covered in spikes) twice a day. 
      • Theory: If I punish myself, God won't punish me by killing me. 
      • Left open wounds on the back, bacteria from the sewer filled streets infected the wounds.
