He believes in the fairness of the social system and has the opinion that aristocrats are not all like their ancestors. Darnay is married to Lucie Manette and is very loving and protective over her, like most men. He is loyal to his friends an family, an example of this is when he left for France to save his former servant, Gabelle. Charles character displays justice because he knows his past is wrong but he is doing everything in his power to change that depiction. He is a righteous man that wants peace for all.

He uses shoe making as a way to distract him from the traumatic events that occurred in his life. He is an older man who aged tremendously due to prison. Dr. Manette is a dynamic character due to the fact of the transition of his independence throughout the story. He starts off leaning on Lucie for comfort and to be protected, he then transitioned to be the protective father he was supposed to be as well as independent. He is a wise, loving, protective father who would do anything for the happiness of Lucie.

She started off as an independent women finding her dad and rescuing him. Dr. manette relied on Lucie for most things, forcing her to be independent and strong. While the story goes on Lucie begins to change, after her father became better she started to rely on him, this was shown at the first court case with Charles Darnay when she hid behind her father because she was scared. Lucie is a kind-hearted soul who is beautiful inside and out, she represents adoration in the novel, for instance, the time she had hope in Sydney Carton when no one else did, she was willing to give him a second chance and believed he had good intentions. Lucie sees the good in everyone and is a very likable character, she is so devoted to her loved ones that she risks the safety of herself for her relationships, like when she rescued her father and when she travled to France to save Darnay.

Once he meets Lucie he instantly falls in love and changes his ways, using his resemblance to Charles Darney for the better. His love for Lucie makes him want to be a better person, he becomes loyal and protective over others and will do anything to help the people he loves. Carton uses his intelligence for the use of helping people but still fails to find love for himself. He would put Lucie and her family over anything else, even if that means himself.
