At this ceremony, Twelves learn what their Assignments will be, and then they will start their training the following day.
Q: What does "releasing" mean in this community?
A: In this community, being released is a small task an adult will perform where they use a syringe to inject a special liquid, which will kill the person. This is performed on newchildren, when they cannot be placed with a family unit, The Old, when they become too old, people who break the law three times, and any other people who request to be released.
Q: Does every family in the community "share their feelings" each evening like Jonas's family does?
A: ?

Personal Thoughts:

Personally, I think sharing feelings seems like a good way to deal with problems and share successes with the family. However, I also thought it was a little strange to do so.

Did it? Why?
A: The apple did change when Jonas threw it. It briefly turned the colour red, but then it changed back to the grey shade the community is used to. This happened because Jonas has the ability to see beyond, and the community doesn't know that colours exist, and they can't see them.

Personal Thoughts:

I wonder what happened to the apple when Jonas was playing catch with it with Asher.

Notes:

- The releasing ceremony his father had performed with the identical twins had happened earlier in the morning
- Jonas is curious about what happens at a release so the Giver says he can watch it, saying that once he is the new Receiver, he can have access to anything he wants
- The two watch the recorded tape of the release; Jonas's father weighs the twins and sends the heavier twin away
- Then Jonas's father prepares a syringe that he then inserts into a vein in the smaller twin's forehead until the syringe is empty, and the newchild is limp and his eyes go blank
- Jonas finally realizes that his father had killed the smaller twin, as Jonas's father places the twin in a small box and pushes it down a chute
- The Giver tells Jonas that when Rosemary had been released, she had asked to inject herself, and she did just that

Questions/Answers:

Q: Why is it so important to the community to not have identical twins, even at the expense of killing them for the cause?
A: It is so important to the community that they don't have identical twins because that would make it very confusing to tell the difference between two people.
Q: What do they do with the "released" newchild after it goes down the slide? Is the body buried somewhere?
A: ?

Personal Thoughts:

I cannot believe that releasing in this community actually means killing them. I think it is horrible that people who perform releasing as part of their jobs and know the truth about it lie to others about it, even if it protects others from getting upset over it. I also don't understand why they cannot have identical twins in the community. Aren't the Committee of Elders focused on Sameness? And if it means so much to people, why couldn't they have their hair dyed a different shade, wear different types of clothes, or one wear a bracelet or a necklace? Why is it so important that they have to kill one??? I also think that it was very brave of Rosemary to inject the syringe herself.
