Facebook is being taken to Australia’s Federal Court over the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The 'This is Your Digital Life' app collected data not only from people who used it but also from their friends. Only 53 Australians downloaded it, but the data of about 300,000 Australians was exposed, and over 86 million users worldwide were affected. The Australian Information Commissioner says Facebook failed to protect people’s data and made its privacy settings confusing. Facebook could face fines of up to $1.7 million per breach.

Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a quiz app obtained the personal information of over 300,000 Australians without their consent, the Australian privacy watchdog is suing Facebook. Investigators claim Facebook had unclear privacy settings, failed to protect user data, and allowed sensitive information to be widely shared. Facebook has yet to provide a complete record of what was shared, according to the watchdog. Large fines were imposed in the US and the UK for similar violations. The Federal Court will now determine whether Facebook violated Australian privacy laws, despite Facebook's claims that it has since strengthened privacy controls and data safeguards.
