Our society today has many expectations and if someone does not follow those expectations it is common that their actions could lead to judgement. I think it is difficult to be a nonconformist because you are doing what you want despite the expectations and judgement of others. When someone is not listening to you, it is obvious and not comfortable. Honest and loyalty are important because when others do not lie to you and are devoted to you and what you say it is relieving. Although Sonny and Jim have disputes often about each other’s interests, Sonny still respects him and cares about him.  Sonny feels less favored around Jim because if his parents opinions of him being different. This gives him more motivation to prove to everyone he can leave Coalwood, but it also affects his family.
