Hello! My name is Osman Akkus. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and a Bachelor Degree in Education from the University of California, Irvine. I am currently a High School History teacher and have been for the past 4 years. I am currently working on my Masters Degree at Angelo State for Professional School Counseling and I plan to make the transition to being a School Counselor for the future. My goal for this course is to learn more about the theories of counseling and gain a better understanding of how they can be used to help to help when certain situations arise.

Many thoughts and feelings are determined by unconscious motives and conflicts. psychoanalysis allows these unconscious feelings to come to light and make it clear.

Psychoanalysis employs the ongoing process of exploring and processing unconscious material over time.

As an aspiring counselor, it is important to know about psychoanalytic theory and its components. It offers a rich framework for understanding the complexities of the human mind and the underlying factors influencing our thoughts, emotions, and actions. The biggest and most important information that struck me was the unconscious mind. The notion that much of our mental activity occurs beyond conscious awareness really makes me thing about the perceptions of self-awareness and rational decision-making. The idea that unconscious desires, conflicts, and childhood experiences shape our adult behavior is incredibly fascinating to me. It makes one wonder weather there are outlying factors that are affecting this action, onw that is not being brought up when making a decision.

As a teacher, it would be interesting to see the relevance of psychoanalytical theories within the classroom. The biggest relevance I could possibly see this will be student behavior. Interpreting and addressing challenging behaviors in the classroom setting will be beneficial when teaching as those can be great disruptors for the whole class. By recognizing that students may use defense mechanisms like projection or displacement to cope with anxiety or stress, teachers like myself can choose to appropriately respond and understand rather than penalize and punish. Learning more about this theory will definitely help me more within my field.

Why are certain therapies, such as Psychoanalysis, NOT applicable to your future role?

I personably do not see the use of psychoanalysis theory in practice within the classroom. While it may be beneficial to know about these theories and see why students act the way they do, it is not professional to apply these as a teacher or a academic counselor. It is more so the role of the therapist rather than the counselor to assess and address the students needs and problematic behaviors rather than the academic counselor who has a different purpose. Therapists specialize in this field while a counselor is geared towards more academic side of schooling.
