Post 1 - Character Trait - Lena Younger (Mama)

Nurturing
"You 'bout to get our fresh little jaw slapped!" "It don't sound nice for a young girl to say things like that- you wasn't brought up that way. Me and your father went to trouble to get you and Brother to church every Sunday" " Now- you say after me, in my mother's house there is still God" (51)

This quote shows Mama is nurturing because she is making sure that her children are raised properly. She is disciplining Beneatha for speaking out on God. Mama also gives her a lecture on it to make sure she understands why she got slapped and yelled at. Although it is tough, Mama is nurturing her children to be better individuals.

Nurturing
"Listen to me, now. I say I been wrong, son. That I been been doing to you what the rest of the world been doing to you. What you ain't never understood is that I ain't got nothing, don't own nothing, ain't never really wanted nothing that wasn't for you. There ain't nothing as precious to me... There int nothing worth holding on to, money. dreams, nothing else- if it means- its going to destroy my boy. I paid the man thirty-five hundred dollars down on the house. That leaves sixty-five hundred dollars. Monday morning I want you to take this money and take three thousand dollars and put it in savings account for Beneatha's medical schooling. The rest you put in a checking account- with your name on it. And from now on any penny that come out of it or that go in it is for you to look after. For you you to decide. It ain't much, but it's all I got in the world and I'm putting it in your hands. I'm telling you to be the head of this family from now on like you supposed to be." (106-107)

This quote shows that Mama is nurturing because she is trusting her children to do their own things and make their own paths. By letting Walter have his own money, it will give him responsibility for himself and his family. Giving Walter responsibility will also mature him as an individual. Mama is nurturing Walter into a better father and family member overall. Mama is making sure that her children become better people.

I believe Mama/Lena is a tough but nurturing person. She is raising her children to become a better person then herself. I sympathize with Mama because she reminds me of the older relatives I have in my family. Mama loves her family and sometimes is tough on them but she does everything for their best interest. My family and I are like that as well where we will do everything in our power to have the best thing for each other. Mama is a very good person. Despite her age, she works hard hours to help support her family. She is trying as hard as she can to make sure they have a better life.

This piece of art represents how Mama is nurturing and raising her kids. Throughout the play there are times where Mama needed to help and "feed" her kids like this woman is watering her plants. There are also times where there will be weeds surrounding the flowers and withering down the flowers health. Mama would need to cut off the weeds from her children so they will grow stronger. Mama is the caretaker of this garden and this garden is her family.

This poem relates to her because this is an example of what Mama's children think about her. Mama has always given the best love she could give. Although the Younger's have been living in a run-down apartment most of their lives, she spent it the best she could with her family. She "planted" herself into her family with her love. She is passing down pieces of knowledge into her kids.

Source: https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/the-best-that-love-could-give

This song relates to Mama because this is how she perceives own her family. She know that her family is not the average family, but she knows that everyone of them are close to each other. Mama sees her own family as a perfect despite the flaws they have. Mama is lucky to have everyone in her family she shows her support to everyone throughout the play. She didn't care much that

Family is family despite their flaws.

"Crazy ‘bout his children! God knows there was plenty wrong with Walter Younger – hard-headed, mean, kind of wild with women – plenty wrong with him. But he sure loved his children. Always wanted them to have something – be something. That’s where Brother gets all these notions, I reckon."

Mama explains how Walter is far from perfect. Despite is imperfections he has his good intentions and positive qualities. Walter is a troubled man at some parts of the play, but he may not show it at times loves everyone with all his heart. Mama is very accepting of this because Walter and father share their strengths and weaknesses. Everyone in the family still loves and accepts him because they're family and they know he loves everyone of them as well.
