“Using social media is not inherently beneficial or harmful to young people. Adolescents’ lives online both reflect and impact their offline lives.

The connection between Twenge’s claim and the APA’s perspective helped deepen my understanding of the effects of social media. Twenge presents a strong correlation between phone use and rising teen depression and suicide, which shows how serious the issue has become. However, the APA offers a more balanced view, suggesting that social media affects teens differently based on their individual situations. This contrast expanded my thinking by showing that social media can both harm and reflect existing struggles. These perspectives will help me outline a well-rounded essay that explores both risk and complexity.

The connection between these two sources helped me understand how deeply social media can influence teen mental health—especially through comparison. Teen Vogue highlights serious consequences like anxiety, depression, and even suicide risk, particularly among teen girls. Meanwhile, Laura M. White explains how simply viewing others’ photos can lower life satisfaction. The amount of time teens spend online just to engage with content kills them slowly and makes them even more insecure. These insights will help me outline my essay by focusing on specific psychological effects like self-comparison and emotional instability caused by social media.

The insights from these quotes reveal how social media addiction is not accidental but a result of deliberate design choices. Tristan Harris’s comment about the “attention economy” highlights how platforms compete for users’ focus, while the " Social Dilemma "explains the biological pull through dopamine and reward pathways. This connection broadens my understanding of social media’s impact by showing that teen compulsive use is fueled by both psychological and neurological factors. This perspective will help me develop an essay section on why social media is so hard for teens to put down.

The connection between these two quotes clearly shows how higher social media usage correlates with significantly worse mental health outcomes for teens. Twenge’s statistic highlights a general increased risk of depression, while the APA data offers a deeper breakdown—showing a direct link between excessive use and suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and body image issues. This expanded my understanding of how social media impacts not just mood, but also self-worth and safety. These connections will help me organize my essay by showing how social media affects emotional, psychological, and behavioral health.
