The real world issue is that families or people in general that are poor are more capable of doing desperate things for money, food, shelter etc. This affects Lakshmi because her family is so poor that her stepfather has to send her away for a job to help out at home. Not only does it affect her because she is being taken away to a job by strangers and away from her home and family but what she doesn't know is what type of job it really is. The issues does change the plot because the issues are what drive to the plot and make it happen.

Lakshmi is a girl who is sold into prostitution at thirteen years old to help her family with money situations. She is the one who is most impacted in this situation. She experiences a lot of traumatizing events such as being sold into prostitution, leaving her family and her home where she grew up at. The experiences she goes through does change her from the beginning until the end. Since she experienced so much at a young age she is always going to be afraid of men, and hurt not only physically but mentally and emotionally too because her step father betrayed her her. She teaches us that we can never be too careful with who we trust, especially stranger even if they claim to be someone close to you.

This article talks about how 69 girls were saved from prostitution and other activities. In the article it says that more than 100,000 children are sold for sex in the U.S. each year. This relates to our world because it could be any child who can get into this. Kids are taken from their home, park, mall, ect. We need to teach children to be more careful and to not go with strangers and we also need to try our best and do what we can to solve this problem.
https://www.npr.org/2010/12/06/131757019/youth-radio-trafficked-teen-girls-describe-life-in-the-game

In the article it says that girls from the ages of 9 - 19 are the ones that are targeted the most for being used in sex trafficking, with an average age of 11. Thats super crazy and insane at the age of 11 you are barely in 6th grade. That being said most kids are also being taken at school, which means it could happen at any time. That could affect anyone in your family, school, friends or community.
http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=1596778

This article proves that most teenage girls can even be easily approached to at malls, where it's a very public place. Places that we think can be safe and go with stranger just for the fun of it can lead to big conflicts even if you think there could be none at all. This is why we need to know and be taught anything that can happen even if very public and open places. Which is why we should be even more careful at parties or on a girls night out. This issue shows that we can never be too careful when were out.
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-sex-trafficking-usd-study-prosecutions-2015oct31-htmlstory.html
