1964- U.S begins the send more and more troops to South Vietnam. (543,000) U.S troops

1968- January North Vietnam launches surprise attack on 32 majors city both sides suffering

heavy casualties the war will not end any time soon.

1968- March U.S troops massacre 400 women children and elderly men.

1973- January a cease fire is drawn up.

1973- The last ground troops leave.

1975- South Vietnam surrenders to North Vietnam.

2014- 1,642 Soldiers are still unaccounted for.

The reason that this operation began was because of the fact that Iraq, under the control of Saddam Hussein, invaded the tiny little country of Kuwait. The reason the United States had to act where because Kuwait where a major oil provider to the United States. And the Iraqi invasion posed a huge threat to Saudi Arabia another nation that provides the United States with oil. Operation desert shield was a defense to place troops in Saudi Arabia to protect from an Iraqi attack. The United States wanted to go to the UN for help but the Soviets who could veto anything in the UN usually backed Iraq and this was another variation of Communism vs. Containment.

americans because we did kind of loose the war. U.S isn't as National proud

because the war is embaressing

not much of a sucess for a war lasting over 10 years. Trillions of dollars has gone to waste.
