He easily took over many countries in Europe and Africa, But the USSR was a different story. Although the USSR were his allies, Hitler still attempted to invade them. He captured the city of Leningrad, and starved around 1 million people. When the USSR refused to surrender, he moved in on the capital city, Moscow. But as winter set in, German forces had not prepared for the cold, and were wearing summer uniforms. Regardless, Hitler said "No Retreat!" His advance on the USSR gained him nothing and cost 500,000 German lives.

Then in march 1941 the Lend-Lease act allowed the president to lend and lease arms and other supplies to any nation that is vital to the United States.

On September 1, 1939, Germany has their first "lightening attack". A lightening attack was a new war technique they were trying out. First, fast planes and tanks would storm in, surprising them. Then, they would be followed by soldiers with weapons. This technique did work in the case of Poland. Germany then went on to countries North of Poland. They thought this would be a quick victory and didn't pack the materials for the unexpected winter war ahead of them. They were outnumbered and outgunned but eventually won the war. They went into a phony war with Great Britain and France but then went on to lightening attack both Denmark and Norway. These attacks were quick and successful.

Roosevelt cut off oil shipments to japan. They decided to bomb Hawaii, to catch the US by surprise. Pearl Harbor had been bombed on December 7,1941. Within 2 hours, they had sunk or damaged 19 ships, 2,300 Americans killed and 1,100 wounded. Almost at the same time as the Pearl Harbor attack the Japanese launched bombing raids on the British colony of Hong Kong and American controlled Guam and Wake Island.
