Heeeeeello! My name is Luiz Henrique Dal Berto, I'm 18 years old, and this is my second semester in the American Academy program. Some of my passions in this life are writing, reading, gaming, and also talking (a lot). I was born In Curitiba and am currently studying to graduate in Journalism in the US :)

Inspiration or Planning? Maybe both?

In order to compose a great text, inspiration and planning are key items that will enhance the experience of writing. Despite seeming to be a complex concept, there are practical techniques one can use to combine creativity and logic.

It is a dream to be in a creative rush where you can produce quality content almost naturally! However it is practically impossible to feel that inspired everyday! Therefore, there is a writing exercise called Free Writing that aims to break the creative block of a writer. This technique consists in writing everything that comes to mind without any concerns about grammatical mistakes and structure (leave those judgements for revisions). By doing so, the writer will feel like they already took the first step in beginning and will be able to develop their work more fluidly.

Some other practical exercises to help the writer in planning and inspiration are:

- Looking for different perspectives
-Brainstorming
-Change focus for a while and resume writing when feeling relaxed

I just changed one small thing in the beginning because it was a repeating word.

When writing future texts, remember that the paraphrase will involve all the techniques learned, happening at the same time. One tip, when writing academic texts, is to always use a Thesaurus and a Dictionary, they are going to be your best friends.

As humans, we are always looking for ways to express and share our thoughts. You would be surprised the variety of text formats one could write to express theirselves. Therefore, there are also regulated formats that are used in formal situations, such as academic texts. These texts are of extreme importance in the academic environment and validate the content of the text as serious and educated.

Bellow, I will list some types of academic texts that are frequently used and objectively disclose it's importance:

A genre of bool designed to assist in the learning process

An academic text about a related subject. Done by students as an assignment.

When we are not feeling sure about the type of a text, there are some questions we can ask ourselves in order to find out and differentiate them:

What is the text?
What is the support that the text rely on?
Where can you find this type of text?
In which context is this text being used?
What is the social and practical function of the text?
What are some of the characteristics of the text?

This action is negatively perceived by the whole academic community and it is also considered theft and academic crime! It is aways crucial to be considerate of other people's work and remember that words are considered private property of the person who wrote them.

The Chunking Method

Chunking is a technique for breaking down a long text into smaller parts and having students rewrite these "chunks" in their own words. Chunking improves the writer's capacity to recognize significant words and ideas, as well as their ability to paraphrase and organize and synthesize material.

Basic Principles of Paraphrasing

001- Always remember to explicitly cite the author in your paraphrases.

002- If your paraphrase is consisted in just changing words/adjectives and paraphrasing it is possible that the final text will be shallow! Be sure to analyze and understand the content you are writing about.

003- Don't include all content of the original text into your final version. Be creative!

004- It is not necessary to change every word from the original text. Instead of focusing in just finding similar words, invest your energy in understanding the content and writing it with your own thoughts without forgetting to give the rightful credit original writer.

Once I saw a TED Talk that expanded on the topic of studying in libraries, and it is scientifically proved that humans feel more stimulated to focus on their studies when they see people successfully doing so. Therefore, they recommended ''Study with me'' videos, which consists in putting a video of somebody else studying in a aesthetically pleasing space on your screen. This helps me to feel motivated and more focused when I see the dedication of the student in the video.

Grammarly is a writing tool that always helps me in checking my text structure and grammar. This can be a helpful writing buddy, but be careful to not rely to much on it! There are a lot of paid resources, but generally it is a good corrector for your final version of a paper.

1st - Make sure to carefully read through the text and check for complex vocabulary.
2nd - Highlight important features of the text.
3rd - Take notes of the key points to better understand the subject and search for possible paraphrasing possibilities and quotations.
4th - Analyze all your notes and make a general summary of them. If needed, you may have to re-organize their structure.
5th - Lastly, after you finished your summary, carefully check for errors and ensure that all your notes are factually correct and that nothing crucial has been altered.
