SP: Short term you will experience above average energy levels, increased irritability, and trouble sleeping. Long term you will experience tremors, muscle spasms and a sore throat.

One thing that I already know about this disorder is that it is usually diagnosed at a young age, but you can be diagnosed up into your teenage or adult years. LP

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction and communication. LP

What are the possible causes of the disorder and what part of the brain is affected?
The exact cause is unknown but possible risk factors include having an immediate family member with autism, genetic mutations, having older parents, low birth weight, and metabolic imbalances. Every region of the brain can be affected by autism, there is no specific particular part as it can be different in every case. LP

What are signs and symptoms of the disorder?
Signs and symptoms of the disorder are limited to no eye contact, no joyful expressions, little or no babbling, no response to name, very few or no words, preference of solitude, restricted interests, resistance to minor changes, repetitive behaviors, and only interacts to achieve a certain goal. Signs of autism appear in children early in life usually somewhere between 12 and 18 months of age. AS

What are the treatment options?
Autism cannot be cured but behavioral analysis, occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and pharmacological therapy are all proven to be effective methods of treating some of the symptoms. AS

There are no short term effects of autism, this is a permanent disorder of the brain. Long term effects of having autism include, social isolation, family discord, difficulty forming and maintaining friendships, difficulty relating and empathizing with others, trouble living independently, trouble finding work, and sleep problems. Three other things to know about autism are that boys are 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with autism, autism can be readily diagnosed at the age of two but most people are diagnosed after 4, and autism does not affect any race or ethnicity more than another. AS

Research does not yet understand how exactly people get autism. Currently they are trying to understand and research if it could be related to genetics, spontaneity, environmental factors, infections/complications/medications during pregnancy, or air pollutants. AS
Research also does not yet understand why rates of autism keep increasing and more people keep getting diagnosed each year. Many disagree on what could be the reason why, but some believe that it could be connected to environmental changes, inherited genetic mutations, vaccines, or air pollutants. LP
