The Spanish colonial period starting in the 16th century again... so it brought major cultural changes to the Philippines. Catholicism, Spanish architecture, cuisine, and language became deeply embedded in Filipino life seen today in churches, food, and even creole languages like Chavacano.

However, colonization also led to the suppression of indigenous religions, literature, music, and traditions. Pre-colonial writing systems were lost, native beliefs discouraged, and a new social hierarchy introduced discrimination and cultural displacement. Colonial narratives often rewrote Filipino history, leaving lasting effects on national identity.
