"He did not know why he was so irrationally happy, for nothing was changed in his life or hers. He had not even touched the tip of her fingers or looked her full in the eyes. But their evening together had given him a vision of what life at her side might be, and he was glad now that he had done nothing to trouble the sweetness of the picture. He had a fancy that she knew what had restrained him...." (Wharton 59)

1. Ethan is happy here and that is kind of hard for me to believe because so far he he seems depressed and that he needs to be alone.
2. Ethan didn't even touch her but he was satisfied with her being there and that left him to be wanting/craving her for the next time they see each other.
3. He is respecting her innocents.
4. He just had a nice image of them in his mind and I feel as if he was dreaming of her and him together for the rest of their lives.

" It was warm and bright in the kitchen. The sun slanted through the south window on the girl's moving figure, on the cat dozing in a chair, and on the geraniums brought in from the door-way, where Ethan had planted them in the summer to "make a garden" for Mattie."

1. There is character development happening here because Ethan is trying to impress Mattie.
2. Imagery is also here because they are describing how the sun is hitting the house.
3. Alliteration is in line 1 "the sun slanted through the south"
4. Mood- It feels warm and comforting and inviting.

"The village lay under two feet of snow, with drifts at the windy corners. In a sky of iron the points of the dipper hung like icicles and Orion flashed his cold fires. The moon had set, but the night was so transparent that the white house-fronts between the elms looked gray against the snow, clumps of bushes made black stains on it, and the basement windows of the church sent shafts of yellow light far across the endless undulations." (Wharton 21).

They drove slowly up the raod between fields glistening under the pale sun, and then bent to the right down a lane edged with spruce and larch." (Wharton 84).

The importance of all 4 passages comes back to helping the reader understand the text better. When the reader is trying to understand how the character feels in the book there needs to be description words and in these passages there are. These are all involved in character development and showing how Ethan Frome grows as a person.
