The firemen were tasked with burning books. It was the same routine every time an alarm was called on a house. Respond swiftly, start the fire swiftly, return to the station and wait for another alarm. That is until one day they get an alarm, itś already strange due to the fact that the police had not taken the person reported yet. Then, as they pump kerosine onto the books to burn them, Montag takes one and hides it under his arm. Later when he gets home he hides it under his pillow and it was found by Mildred when Captain Beatty visits Montag due to him not being at work that day. Eventually he agrees to turn in the book to Captain Beatty and when he does he finds out an alarm has been called on his house. When they arrive Montag has to burn down his house himself. He burned books everyday, but after Mildred committed suicide and he met Clarisse. 

Clarisse starts to make him think more and become different than everyone else. Beatty finds out that Montag is hiding books in the air vent. He realizes he doesn't like his job anymore and Beatty starts to notice something strange going on.

Montag meets Faber and he helps him break away from the society. He burns down his house but he felt good about it. After that he kills Beatty with a flamethrower, and also kills the mechanical hound. But the hound bit him and ejected something into hi leg that made it very numb.
