At school I use a very simple form of art to illustrate grammar. I invented the "House of Tenses" to show my students that it's quite easy to understand how they work in context, e.g. using the present perfect as elevator between the floors of past and present. I hope you'll like the idea.

It is important to have visuals in an early childhood classroom as a reminder of the rules. Our rules chart is posted on the wall in several locations throughout our classroom at the children’s eye level so we can refer to it when necessary.I feel it is extremely important to keep all classroom rules positive, notice how I have not included the word “don’t” in any of the rules. Our rules include:Helping Hands,Listening Ears,Quiet Voices,Eyes Looking,Walking Feet

I also like to use pictures by famous painters to have the pupils describe the images: in this way they can practise the use of vocabulary related to image descriptions (on the left/right, in the middle, in the top left-hand corner, on both sides, in the foreground/background and so on) and they realize that it is not so difficult to describe simple images/photos and famous painting as well.

Art can be stimulating for a lot of activities with students as I said in the Tricider above. An idea would be that of working with colors especially with younger students. They can identify ,in small groups ,warm colors, primary colors cool or warm colors, complementary colors or secondary colors. Then build as many sentences as possible with the color category identified. With older students you can work on helping them to understand how to read a painting . In a group , students can find information on the painter , on the artistic period in which he painted the Sunflowers, another group can find information on how Van Gogh draws inspiration from, what subjects he uses , his technique of painting using a text where to find information etc: Another group can work on the author biography to create a self-portrait of him using a given text about his life in which they have to rearrange the frame in the correct order. These are also CLIL activities for an interdisciplinary work with the Art , English and Italian teachers.
At the end of the collaborative work the groups can use a Padlet with a specific title Van Gogh "Sunflowers " in which they put their works . In this way they use the digital skills that students likes so much.

Or another activity: We will create a Stormboard about SUNFLOWERS that will contain photos, videos, poems write by the students, creative artistical compositions, drawings, everything that will cross their minds about this topic.

The activity was divided into four steps. First the students watched the illustrations from story, after they watched a short animation of the story. Then they had to reorganize the pictures according to the story. The third activity was to write on a petal shape paper a sentence saying what they felt about the story and the activity. Afterwards they wrote a different ending to the story. Each class had a flower built with the petals and at the end of the activity we put the flowers on the library's walls.

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”
Our goal is to arouse students’ interest and promote their lateral thinking. How do we keep students engaged and motivated inside a classroom, especially when the topics are not easy to grasp from the students’ perspective? To effectively expose students to abstract concepts or theories, I employ the following 4 steps:

1. Introduce terminology before the theory itself.

2. Describe the procedure and environment in which the theory applies.

3. Illustrate the formulation of the theory.

4. Organize the materials and explore beyond the theory.

For each step, I make use of hand-drawn pictures to facilitate learning and to arouse students’ interest and imagination.
The key success factor in utilizing pictures effectively in our classroom is to get students involved and engaged with our drawings, to encourage them to imagine and visualize what is in the picture and, most importantly, what is not.

I think pictures, drawings, photos, visual art in general is very important to keep the attention of my students and to facilitate sharing ideas. I teach French Literature and often I start my lessons warming up my students with a picture related to the subject I'm going to introduce them. They get involved immediately and take an active part in the lesson. Sometimes a famous painting can synthetise the elements of a literary and historical period and help them to understand and keep in mind even complex ideas.
Irma Toti,
