I read chapters one through eight of Red Rising. The book starts out by introducing the main character Darrow and his family. Darrow works in the mines and there are many problems. In the society that Darrow lives in, there is a hierarchy with "colors" that people have. The colors differentiate the people. Darrow bids to win the "'laurel", which gives food and supplies to the winner. Darrow risks his life in the process of the bid. He builds a relationship with Eo, who is another "red" like Darrow. Eo and Darrow go to a secret garden that reds are not allowed into. But, the grays find them and punish them. Eo is sentenced to death because of their trip to the secret garden. Chapter 9 is titled, "I do not understand". Darrow finds out that Mars is already habitable. This is something that was lied to him since childhood. Dancer explains a process to Darrow on how he can change his color to gold. Darrow meets mickey. Mickey is a person who trades slaves. Mickey is asked to do the carving, which is the color changing, on Darrow, but he refuses at first. Finally, Mickey performs the procedure on Darrow. Darrow meets a pink slave named Matteo. Matteo teaches Darrow to dance like the gold people. Darrow trains for his Academy test and he meets a girl. Darrow begins to understand how the institute works. He meets all of the Praetors. Praetors are people who choose the houses that people live in inside the institute. There were one thousand people chosen for the Mars House, and Darrow was chosen tenth. Darrow met three new people in the house-- Antonia, Cassius, and Priam. Darrow wake up the next day and gets beaten, then is locked in a room with Julian. They are told that only one person can leave the room. Darrow murders Julian. This starts tension between all of the characters. Cassius becomes angry because she cannot find Julius. The bond between Cassius and Darrow grows stronger, even though he doesn't know that Darrow killed Julius. I think this is a great match to the content in the book. It uses some foul language in the book. This was a genre that i'm not a huge fan of (sci-fi). But, I enjoyed the plot and all of the characters. I thought the book ended perfectly.
