According to Eastern Christian tradition, Addai of Edessa or Thaddeus of Edessa was one of the seventy disciples of Jesus. He is possibly identical with Thaddaeus, one of the Twelve Apostles. From an early date his hagiography is filled with legends and fabrications. The saint himself may be entirely fictitious.

Saint Thomas, a Christian from the modern-day Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, left the Roman Empire to preach the gospel. In AD 52, he made it as far as Muziris of Tamilakam (modern-day North Paravur and Kodungalloor in Kerala State, India), which is in South India. Some of the relics were transported to Ortona, in the Italian region of Abruzzo, where they have been kept in the Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle, since 1258. Among Christians in India, he is revered as the country's patron saint, and July 3rd is designated as Indian Christians' Day. Among the Saint Thomas Christians of the Indian subcontinent, the name Thomas is still quite common.

Mar Benyamin Shimun XXI was born on 1887. On Marth 30th 1903 (when he was 16 years old) he became a Patriarch after his uncle, Mar Rowil Shimun (the Patriarch before him) passed away. One day while his brother, Hormiz, was going to universary in Istanbul, when he got kidnapped by the Turkish government and threatened to kill him if Mar Benyamin didn't give up the whole nation. He courageously responded that Hormiz was but one brother while all Assyrians were his children. Mar Benyamin’s punishment for his act was paid by the Turkish government when they killed Hormiz, who paid the ultimate price. After some time, the Turks invited Mar Benyamin Shimun to a peace meeting. He decided to attend it along with 100 soldiers. At the end of the meeting, as he was walking out a Turkish soldier shot him in the chest and killed him.
