Martin Luther King responds to the sincere criticism of other genuine religious leaders in order to better explain his actions towards justice. Beginning with the argument of being an outsider, King replies that injustice in Birmingham affects those in other cities. Answering why he pursues direct action instead of negotiation, King says that direct action provides the necessary pressure for negotiation. In response to being asked why break some laws and obey others, King responds that, morally, just laws must be followed while unjust laws must be disobeyed. Replying to being called extreme, King states that he acts in moderation, lying between two opposite forces.

Martin Luther King once declared, "Segregation, to use the terminology of the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber, substitutes an 'I-it' relationship for an 'I-thou' relationship and ends up relegating persons to the status of things. Hence segregation is not only politically, economically and sociologically unsound, it is morally wrong and awful" (3).

King had once said, "Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and establish such creative tension that a community that has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. ... Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, we must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood" (2).
