The son of a prosperous landowner, Rizal was educated in Manila and at the University of Madrid. A brilliant medical student, he soon committed himself to the reform of Spanish rule in his home country, though he never advocated Philippine independence. Most of his writing was done in Europe, where he resided between 1882 and 1892.

Rizal's first novel, Noli me tangere (The Social Cancer), was published in 1887, as a passionate prove of the evils of Spanish rule in the Philippines. El filibusterismo (1891; The Reign of Greed), his sequel, established him as the leading spokesman of the Philippine reform movement. He published an annotated edition of Antonio Morga's Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas (1890; reprinted 1958), hoping to demonstrate that the native Filipinos of the Philippines had a strong tradition prior to the arrival of the Spaniards.

To rededicate the lives of youth to the values of freedom and nationalism for which our heroes fought and died, we must study Jose Rizal. To honor our national hero for dedicating his life and effort to molding the Filipino character. To gain an invigorating source of patriotism by studying Rizal's life, works, and writings.

He did not choose to live a luxurious life, as most of us would. Even before he was being watched by the Spaniards, he had tried to keep his life as simple as possible. I believe it was his parents' work that caused him to live like this. I am convinced that one's lifestyle is heavily influenced by one's parents. I learned from Rizal's life the importance of parents participating in their children's moral development. And I noticed about Rizal's life was his composure and capacity to think clearly even in the most difficult circumstances. His advocacy for Philippine independence is lawful and nonviolent, which is why he published so many novels to reawaken the revolutionary spirit of Filipinos.
