Our society greatly values gold, and we are not alone. Throughout history many cultures have used gold for decoration, currency, jewelry, and even in construction. What makes this metal so desirable and why has it been used in so many different ways? These are the questions that  will be exploring today. Gold is not a newly discovered element. In fact, gold has been used in various ways for hundreds of years.

Why gold? Well, it seems that most early cultures were fascinated by metals. Gold is a metal that is found world wide, and so it makes sense that it is mentioned by so many ancient cultures.  

It is uncertain when mankind first came in contact with gold. However, gold has been found in caves dating back as far as 40,000 BC. 

The first obvious use of gold is by the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians greatly valued gold as a part of their culture and their religion. They made golden masks, jewelry, and even the tops of the great pyramids were constructed from gold. The Egyptians were also among the first to mine gold and use it as currency, or money.

However, the ancient Egyptians were not alone in their love for gold. The ancient Greeks also greatly valued gold. They saw gold as a sign of wealth, and also used it for currency.
