As we know, books are very popular in school. Although their popularity is starting to fade, they are still alive and well.
While I was in high school, we were assigned to read the book, “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. This is a certain book that you would define as a classic and because of its age, I felt obligated to ask my grandparents about it. It turned out that my grandma had read the same book when she was in school. Another great part to this story is that my grandma and I went to completely different schools growing up.
The fact that a specific book has been around in schools, all over, for over three generations proves McLuhan’s message that print modernizes education. It takes something, such as a book, from a long time ago, and keeps it around for many generations in order to teach similar life lessons.

Grades are products of print

Print has also modernized education in McLuhan’s idea of rationality and organization. As humans, it is pleasing to us when things are organized. The reasoning behind this is because we are taught that to be rational is to also be visual. Of course, to be rational is defined as making sense, so really what McLuhan is trying to say, is that in order to make sense we must be visually organized.
In education, as well as in life, McLuhan’s theory is completely right. We base just about every assignment and task on some sort of number scale or letter grade. By doing so, we can look at the number or grade we have in the class and relate it to how well we are doing. This sort of organizational formula allows our brains to rationalize what we are doing properly, or what we need to work on.

Group Projects vs. Individual Projects

Individual projects are not as popular anymore as they used it be. Nowadays, everyone wants to be apart of a group project with the mindset that ideas will be shared amongst the group members.
The group project itself is a new form of technology because it is a strategic way of using other people’s ideas to increase your personal knowledge. If you are stuck on a question, you now have the ability to ask your peer for help, rather than having to figure it out on your own.

Whether you realize it or not, the internet has not been around forever. In fact, there was a time where people had to actually go to the library and look for scholarly sources instead of just looking it up on Google Scholar.
Electronic technology has changed education in the form of allowing the entire world to have access to just about anything they desire. It’s mind blowing, I know! It opens this new world of publicity and getting your thoughts out there, as well as seeing what other people have to say about those thoughts.
In today’s generation, we have it really easy becasue of all of the sources we are familiar with such as Google, Wikipedia, Quizlet, Grammarly, and so much more. When we have an assignment that we are struggling with, we immediately run to the internet for help because we know that the answer will be there. Due to this extra help, we don’t have to work as hard because we now have the ability to rely on the web for assistance.

Now that technology is booming greater than ever, we are seeing a vast amount of improvement. We now have access to so many apps and websites to help us create the absolute best version of our assignments and help us succeed. We are also given the ability to look up literally anything we want to in order to gain knowledge about an infinite number of topics.

Unfortunately, as great as it sounds to just look anything up, we are ultimately taking the easy way to solving problems. We have calculators to solve math equations, we have Google to answer our questions, and we have apps such as Easybib, and Grammarly to make sure that we are spelling and citing everything correctly. In general, we are learning to just go to the web for help, rather than finding the solution ourselves.

Even though there are many positives and negatives about this topic, I believe that the increase of technology in education has been for the best. Yes, it makes everything easier, but when used properly, we can gain just as much knowledge as we would by going to a local library and checking out a book. I think that especially during COVID, technology has saved many students’ education plan by allowing them to continue school from home. As long as technology isn’t abused, it allows for us to expand our own ideas off of other people’s which basically means that it is just a global group project.

I have never used this app before, or have even heard of it until we had our zoom meeting with the librarian. I wanted to challenge myself and try something new, so I went back and looked through the different presentation ideas and eventually decided on Padlet.
One of the attractions that really stuck out to me was the bright, and bold backgrounds that were available to choose from. I also liked the different layout options for the presentation. I thought that it allowed for diversity and creativity. Personally, I like things to be organized, so I chose the option of having designated columns to break up the questions.
Another part that I enjoyed about Padlet was the option of adding pictures, gifs, videos, links, and articles from the web. I wanted to try this feature out so I decided to choose a couple of images and gifs that related to my subtopics. I also found a video that I wanted to include and I found it very simple to copy and paste the link.
