Hannah Montana by Autumn Nevarez

This is a television show that aired on Disney Channel from 2006-2011 starring Miley Cyrus as Miley Stewart. She is just an ordinary teen living a double life as a famous pop-star. She chooses to live a double life because she enjoys living her regular life as a teen going to public school as well as being a high-profile celebrity that her classmates drool over. The show is, in all, usually a day in her double life with her dad, brother, and two bestfriends Oliver and Lily, with some sort of drama that gets resolved by the end of the episode. The seasons go over her adolescent years all the way until she gives up her double life and retires the role.

This is the 19th episode in season 3 and sort of a cross-over episode as Disney used to do a lot, with "Suite Life on Deck." Hannah is performing a show in Hawaii and boards the S.S. Tipton to get there with her father and Lola (Lilly). She loses her mother''s anklet that she wears at every show and gets spooked, believing that the sequence of unlucky events to follow are the direct result of that (singing flat, losing her Hannah wig, breaking a mirror, finding a student's lost pet rat on her head, dying her hair green instead of blonde). Once it turns out that a housekeeper turned the anklet over to London Tipton after finding it, she tries to get it back but London drops it into the ocean and the only item she has left from her mother it is gone forever.

Lilly's impact on Miley

As Steinberg states, "Regardless of the structure or norms of a particular peer group, peers play an extremely important role in the psychological development of adolescents" (203, right). From the start of the show, Lilly was Miley's moral support as she tried calming her, reassuring her that the anklet would be found and everything will be fine. Her role in trying to keep Miley sane was obvious partly because she was the only friend that she had in this episode-- she went along with her everywhere looking for the anklet, offered her one of her Lola wigs, and dyed Miley's hair for her once she also lost her Hannah wig (it turned out green instead of blonde). She also helped Miley snap out of her funk over the loss in her final snap when she was finally tired of hearing Miley whine about how defeated she feels without the anklet, telling her, "You're freaking Hannah Montana!! You never let your fans down and you're not going to now!"

Played by her real-life father, their relationship on screen is genuine. Mr. Stewart has an authoritative parenting style throughout the seasons of the show as we have seen him tell his daughter "no," ground her, reward her, and have heart to hearts with her. Although he was sea-sick a majority of this episode, he came through for Miley in the most meaningful way at the most crucial moment. He gives her a pep-talk and explains that it doesn't matter that she lost her mother's anklet because she is always with her and in her heart, watching over proud. He reveals this is a similar sentiment to the way that he was left to raise her and her brother without her physical being-- and he's done that just fine, the same way she'll continue to be Hannah just fine. As the text states on adolescents with an authoritative parent, "adolescents are more likely to identify with, admire, and form strong attachments to their parents, which makes them more open to their parent's influence" (147, right). This effect is obvious in the way that you see the two connect and bond over the conversation, he opens Miley's eyes to the fact that her mother's presence goes beyond a materialistic item. He also reveals to her that he always has her back-up wig. Miley's spirits are completely restored after.

Media's Impact

A lot of this episode had to do with the impact that the media has on Miley because she was trying her hardest to please her fans but felt like she couldn't without that anklet. Since she was so saturated in the media as our text would put, she knew there were standards from her image to uphold. She had to uphold her look that they expect from her which was why losing her wig was so devastating. These are fans that have already been following her for years. She knew she couldn't go out in a bright blue Lola wig or with green hair. She also felt pressured when at the rehearsal after losing the anklet, she sang flat and noted that even the sound booth was boo-ing her. She felt the pressure of the media ultimately after losing the anklet because she wanted to please them and be the Hannah she's always been with the anklet.
