- Why did you choose this field of work?

When I was younger, the first movie I watched was Disney’s Tarzan, and I would watch it several times a day, almost everyday of the week. Till this day, I would watch it and still be moved by the art. Growing up, I wasn’t exposed much to the concept of art. However, I always found myself doodling on any sort of canvas, be it a textbook, handouts, even writing paper and books. I only seriously considered it to be a career when I got into polytechnic, as that was the first time I decided to take a risk and follow my greatest interest. I am very fortunate to be able to study the concept of art in depth, and create artworks that are expressed through colors and composition. Hence, I decided that I wanted to continue making art in the form of Illustrations and applied for this position in hopes for a great start in this field of work.

- What is your biggest weakness when it comes to this line of work?

I feel that my greatest weakness has to be juggling between my personal life and work, since I tend to get so invested in work, I often forget to take care of my own body. Since my immune system is rather weak, I tend to fall sick quite easily, but not too sick, so I should still be able to continue working. I am working on this though, where I try to take vitamins if not drink loads of different teas that are good in different aspects for my body.

-Why should we hire you?

I feel that I do meet the standard that you as a company are looking for, and am a very diligent worker. I take criticisms with an open mind, put them into good use to improve myself and my art. I also feel that my works suit the company’s taste and style, so I figured that this particular job will be a great start for me in this industry.

-What is your most successful piece in your portfolio, and why do you think so?

I have to say my most successful piece in my portfolio is the watercolor piece I did. Despite it being my very first watercolor piece, I think I managed to ulitize the colors well to make the art piece appealing. Not only that, I think the method that I used to blend and apply the watercolor is effective, where the end product did not look muddy or clouded. Other than that, I feel that the simple, minimalistic composition was easy yet aesthetic to the eyes.

-What do you think makes up a good illustrator?

To me, the most important factor is an open mind, since art has such a broad medium, and people have different opinions. So I find that with an open mind, not only can you apply to your work to make it better, but you might even learn a thing or two that you never thought of before. I find that you never stop learning when it comes to art, so it would be great to be able to take in criticisms if not opinions and learn along this journey of working in this industry as an Illustrator.

-What would you say your greatest strength is when it comes to Illustration?
I would say that my greatest strength is that the colors I use often compliment each other very well by contrasting each other in an aesthetic way. I know that I am rather weak in composition and perspective overall, but with the colors I implement in my pieces, people often overlook the flaws and compliment my use of colors and lighting.

-If a deadline were to suddenly change, how would you go about handling it?
If the deadline were to suddenly be pushed forward, I would immediately re-evaluate my schedule and re-prioritise the things I had to do to adhere to the new deadline, if it were to be pushed back I would use the additional time to refine the work even more.

-What is the weakest piece in your portfolio?
My weakest piece in my opinion is the one related to my background design, I have trouble filling the space so to speak and often find my background being overly detailed or lacking to much, and it’s something I’m still working on improving.

-Where do your strengths lie as an animator?
Personally I feel as an animator, I’m better at character animation, I tend to find myself observing the quirks of people and add it to the animation to give a bit more personality to the character I’m animating. And in general, I just think it’s fun to add all these tiny animation details to make the character more ‘alive’.

-What’s your favourite piece in your portfolio?
My favourite piece, even though it’s pretty old, is actually the 2D animation I did, Starlight, it was the first ‘big’ piece I did using digital 2D animation. A lot of work and effort was put into that piece and it’s a very satisfying feeling to look back at it.

-What is your current favourite animated film?
For the longest time, my all-time favourite animated film has always been the How to Train Your Dragon series. I’ve always been amazed by the visuals, the lore, the music and the detail to the animation, it always gives me chills when I watch it.

-If you disagree with someone on a certain aspect of a project, how would you approach the situation?
First off, I would talk it out with the person and try to view the ideas objectively. And then bring up the issue with the other people working on the project as well and see if we can reach a consensus as a whole.

-What made you want to be an animator?
I’ve always been amazed by how animated films and shows can affect people, they can trigger so many emotions and spread valuable messages, it’s this reach that inspired me to pursue animation, I want to be able to entertain people through these means as well.

-Do you think that mocap is better than regular animation?

I feel that mocap animation and regular keyframe animation both have their benefits and disadvantages and it really depends on the situation. Mocap is fast but the motion of the character is limited to the performer and in some more cartoony or fantasy setting in some films the desired motion cannot be achieve with mocap alone. So in my opinion rather then having one better than the other, having both working in tandem would be ideal.

-In your opinion, what is your biggest downfall?
To me my overthinking and meticulous nature is what I feel to be my biggest downfall, I tend to over think my actions sometimes get too caught up in details while working like I would think to myself how would others interpret a certain action I do and whether that action was the best choice or not, and it slows me down by quite abit, but I have been trying to just trust in my decisions more.

Interview Questions [Liana]

-What have been the biggest failures that you've experienced and how did you get back up from it?
I have not experienced that many falls in terms of the working industry yet, but in terms of school the biggest failure I've experienced was one of the group assignments I've worked on in which I was the leader. I kept tanking most of the work because I was worried that I was not doing enough, and in the end I became so incredibly overwhelmed with the workload, and I also was too lenient on my group mates, causing us to barely reach the deadlines because I did not dare to rush them. While we did finish our work however, our presentation was poorly executed and we received the least positive feedback from everyone else in the cohort putting us 2nd to last. It took a very hard blow to my self-confidence but I eventually came to the conclusion that I had to get back up, so I did. I became more trusting of the group mates that I have now and more strict when it comes to keeping track of deadlines.

-Where do you usually draw inspiration from?
Anything basically. I find ideas in everything, be it the environment, what I see online, music I hear; it mostly depends on mood. While I usually draw fan-art when I'm artblocked I do come up with original concepts a lot as well. My biggest source of inspiration would be from listening to music. I listen to a lot of Techno/EDM and rock, sometimes a bit of Alternative here and there. I don't usually get character concept ideas from music however; it's more of a composition-based inspiration, like how a scene is portrayed for example.

-What do you think makes a good artist?
To me, a good artist is open to change. Different companies and different people have a different perspective on everything, so it's good to be open to everything be it conceptually or physically even when it comes to art style. Also be open to critiques because it's useful to learn other people's opinions and use it to better yourself. After all there's no such thing as "too much learning".

-What do you think your weaknesses are?
I have a bad habit of saying yes to everything and tanking all the work. while this seems like a good thing on one hand because I'm being productive it's like a double-edged sword; I tend to overdo it and my workpile just increases and increases and I never end up doing anything because most of the time I'm just too overwhelmed to do the work and I get tired out easily by it. I do manage to get them done but it's always at the last minute because the adrenaline of deadline is the main thing that makes me do it. I'm trying to pace myself better and get a better work schedule working so I don't end up skipping nights of sleep just to rush everything.

-Why do you choose animation as your main career?
I've always been into art since I was able to pick up a crayon. In fact I was so into art that I often got punished by the teachers back in primary and secondary school for drawing in my books and not paying attention to math lessons. I would stay in the art room all day because that was where I found peace and a sense of belonging. I also loved watching animated movies instead of live action ones even up till now because you can do so much more in an animation and seeing them come to life is just magical to me, and I grew up wanting to do that. Now that I've actually learned the secrets behind animation, it's actually an arduous procedure, but with great effort comes great reward and I'm willing to do all the work just to see my creations come to life.

-Why do you choose to do modeling/creation instead of animating/effects/compositing?
I feel that modeling allows me to use most of my creativity instead of the other steps in animation. In my opinion, I feel more productive being the one that creates the model as I have almost total control of how it turns out physically. Sure I have to follow the concept art but sometimes changes have to be made because some things despite looking nice in 2d wouldn't work in 3d or would be hard to animate. Additionally I also do concept art so to be able to translate my 2d concepts into 3d is a very rewarding experience. Also, I love to texture my models because I love painting. I think the only thing I dont find particularly enjoyable is the rigging process because of how one wrong step can make you go all the way back to square one.

Everyone - WHat about answers to "Do you have any questions?"

Liana - avoid the word 'tanking'. It's colloquial, and more suitable in a gaming context. Usage of that word or similar terms in the situation is if the tone of the interview is less formal (allow the interviewers to set the tone).
- "worried" -> "concerned" would sound more positive
- "I also was too lenient on my group mates, causing us to barely reach the deadlines because I did not dare to rush them" This part could be rephrased without putting yourself or your teammates in a negative manner.

YeeRen - (First question) Consider elaborating on what you would re-prioritise. Have you faced this situation before? It would strengthen your answer if you could give an example.

Haz - "Describe a typical work week" might not be a question that the company might ask. It does not really reveal useful information about yourself as an artist.
