During WWI, Turkey sided with the Axis Powers. Suspicions grew again because military leaders thought that the Armenians would be likely to side with the Allies in return for their independence. On April 24, 1915, the Turkish government arrested and executed several hundred Armenians. Killing Squads were then created out of murderers and ex-convicts. Twenty-five concentration camps were set up by the Ottoman government and there were death marches in the desert.
