But art scholars do have suspicion that Jan's older brother, Hubert Van Eyck, taught him to ropes to painting. So even before the Renaissance, Jan was painting since childhood.

Fun fact, they collaborated on The Ghent Altarpiece, but efforts were continued by Jan solo after the death of his brother on September 18, 1426.

Although he wasn't the one to invent oil painting which has been falsely stated throughout the internet. He was had the right technique to make textures, lighting and all else in realism, almost identical to reality.
