Teacher:

Collaboration- This teacher mentioned that collaboration is a really big phenomenon in schools these days. PLCs are a way that teachers in the same department can get together and share ideas. They work together to make classrooms the strongest they can be so it is helpful to collaborate. Sometimes a teacher may feel hurt if they are struggling or their test scores are low and may take it personally. If they stay open to suggestion from other teachers whose classes are performing better, then they can learn tips that may help them improve.
Co-Teaching- It is usually a regular education and special education teacher collaborating to teach a combined level class to provide instruction for all levels of students. Co-teachers need to be able to depend on each other to do what is expected of them. Both teachers need to have agreed upon responsibilities and keep up with those responsibilities to the best of their ability. Benefits include having another teacher to work with where one teacher better knows the needs of certain students. Barriers include teachers who don't work well together or have very different styles. The first class that this teacher co-taught in she wasn't prepared and felt she didn't get much preparation with college courses. Now though, she feels much more comfortable in her role.
Consultation- Consultation is getting help and gaining knowledge from a trusted advisor. As a new teacher, she was assigned a mentor teacher with whom she consulted with on a daily basis about a variety of issues. The benefits of consultation are vast and help us to gain new or more in depth knowledge. Barriers include not having a person with whom you feel comfortable consulting or a lack of time.

School Counselor:

Collaboration- Working with other professionals towards a common goal. The counselor says that collaboration between counselors, teachers, administrators, and families is what keeps a school healthy. Educators benefit from collaboration because it is important for everyone to be on the same page about a students and for the right hand to know what the left is doing. When we all collaborate, we can give students consistency. You need to have good communication and be willing to reach out to others.
Co-Teaching- This usually occurs in an integrated classroom which has many different levels of students learning in the same classroom. For this to be a success, educators must be open to working with each other, have similar or complimentary teaching styles, have open and respectful communication, have time to collaborate, and understand shared duties. Benefits include having a partner to work with who knows all the same students, have someone to learn from, and to share responsibilities. Barriers can occur if the co-teaching pair is not a good fit and if expectations for either teacher are not met. As a school counselor, she engages in co-teaching occasionally during group lessons. In these instances, she prepares beforehand with the other teacher or counselor she will be working with.
Consultation- Consultation between professionals is seeking help or advice. The counselor says she most often seeks consultation with the administrator of the student she has a concern about. It is important the the consultant and the consultee have mutual respect for each other and trust them to do what is in the best interest of the student. If trust isn't there, then consultation and collaboration can't occur. The counselor says that consultation is an important part of counseling and she was taught this by mentors throughout her career.
