Inez did not claim to be Joan, but presented herself as 'the Herald' or 'the Woman on a Horse'. The British suffragettes had already claimed Joan as their patron saint, some of them wearing armor as an expression of their determination to fight for the vote. Joan was beatified in 1909 and her 500th birthday was in 1912. Similar to Joan, Inez died young, in the midst of delivering a speech for female suffrage. She is very well known in the West, but it is important to remember that her tale has been told overseas and that other cultures might have a different version of her. In this picture, Joan is portrayed as a powerful figure in the sense that she holds a sword (which may or may not be covered in blood), fully armored and looking up in the sky on the battlefield from which we can assume she won. Immediately, my attention is drawn to the sword as it is a symbol of power, but it is also a symbol of violence. Joan herself admits to wielding one, but she preferred her banner over it, which showed her peaceful nature. This has it seem that Joan was a mighty warrior in the sense that she killed many. It is also clear, however, that in this portrayal of her, that it is clear that Joan is a woman. Her armor clearly shows that as her breasts are clearly defined (and protected) by the plate armor around it and the bottom half of her armor looks like a ripped up skirt. While she does have very short hair in this image, it is important to note that her hair not only still looks feminine, but is blonde as well. It shows Joan's devoutness, with her posture it shows obedience and loyalty. Also, i thought it was really interesting how the artist decided to depict Joan in a dress with a shepherds staff showing her more vulnerable and feminine side rather than armor like most other images of Joan are drawn. Also with this image of the message being received, compared to other images, this one does not look at "crazy" or hellish and scary as the others. For example a lot of other depictions of her visions are dark and seem to be very dramatic and dream like however, this image shows to be more straightforward. The artist is trying to show the audience how complicated it might feel to Joan as she is hearing these voices and not knowing what the message is. The artist paints with neutral colors and shows the blank stare in Joan's face meaning that she is listening to what her voices have to say.
