Totally drained in 1962, as a result of a national project to cope with malaria, seasonal floods and in order to gain land for agriculture the lake Karla ecosystem ceased to exist after hundred of thousands of years. It took only a couple of decades and a series of environmental problems to realise that the wetland had to be restored. Infertile and salty land which failed to meet the expectations of intensive agriculture production, salinization of the aquifer, drift to a drier microclimate, income loss for the local fishermen, land subsidences and faults were some of the negative impacts of the Lake Karla drainage.
