I wasn't around during the junior high model, so its good to be reminded of that history and how the model is different from the middle school model. I'm glad that we've moved to a more supportive model for the emotional/social needs of our students. I also enjoyed the 8 Things Article because it was full of middle school truths AND it was funny.

One aspect that stood out to me was that students who are in middle school often times respond better to small group settings. It is interesting to see the framework for middle school and how that is supposed to work.

They are insecure about their place in the world and who they are as people, and we can help them take positive steps in their growth.

Before reading the articles, I don't think i had given much thought to the difference between a junior high and a middle school. I appreciate that the middle school philosophy is taking a more holistic approach because they are changing and going through so many things, and they need to be validated and addressed. I really enjoyed the 8 things article and how it brought some of those characteristics of middle schoolers, the ones that can wear us down, and cast them in a more humorous and understanding light. definitely good reminders!

The article which highlighted the major goals of middle level educators was refreshing. It's nice to see curriculum (?) centered around making kids more aware of the world we live in. Laughed heartily at "8 Things", lastly, it was nice to get more understanding about the Advisory piece. Oh, and Padlet, never used it, this resource has a place in some future lessons for me.

One thing that stood out to me as I was going through these articles and videos was how much relationship building and positive interactions between teachers and students can affect a student's success in the classroom. I believe that building relationships with our kids is the very best thing we can do for our students, so I love that we are seeing more procedures that are put in place to assure that students have safe learning environments. Also, I loved that "8 things..." article because it made me giggle quite a bit because of how accurate it was.

Keeping the whole student in mind, and understanding and supporting them and being consistent and loving them where they are at... all super important for me to remember and practice.

" article, it was a good reminder of what to expect, and what is developmentally appropriate at this age with regards to behavior. The Middle School Advisory outline was also great, I saved a copy to my desktop and can hopefully use this outline to encourage great conversation and relationship building.

I enjoyed the "8 Things I Know For Sure About Middle School Kids." This was a good resource for me as this will be my first time teaching middle school. I was able to think about it from the perspective of my future students... It also made me realize that from the social aspect is not going to be so different than teaching freshmen. Public praise can backfire and the unwanted attention could distress the student.
